Starting A level Mathematics courses

alevelDevelop your understanding of mathematics beyond GCSE by joining our StA (start A-level) maths course. Mathematics is pervasive in life and this course will give you the opportunity to study the subject further and improve your understanding of some of the ways mathematical content is developed beyond GCSE level.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop his or her understanding of the mathematics curriculum beyond GCSE. It is particularly appropriate for teachers who are currently teaching mathematics outside their subject specialism or those graduates wishing to teach mathematics and need to improve their understanding of the subject before progressing to a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

What qualifications do I need to have to enrol on the course?

You will need to have at least a GCSE Grade B (or equivalent) in Mathematics.

What is the content of the course?

StA maths will introduce you to some of the core content of pure mathematics studied at A’ level.
Topics will include:

Coordinate geometry
Logarithms
Sequences and series
The algebra of circles
Graphical transformations
Trigonometrical identities
Functions Introductory calculus

How is the course assessed?

Assessment of your progress on the course will be through a series of online tests

Is there an examination?

No, the course does not have a formal examination.

What is the structure of the course?

The course has been designed to allow you to study at your own pace from home or at work. It starts with a one week summer school in July. Sessions will be held at the Mathematics Science Learning Centre, Highfield Campus, University of Southampton each day from 9.30 – 4.30pm. After this you will be supported by a fortnightly webinar and email contact with your tutor.

How long is the course?

The course will run from July to December 2016.

Cost

The course costs £345 per person new to the course (2016). £145 for those delegates who have already attended the NCTL-funded Teacher Subject Specialism Programme in mathematics running at University of Southampton in 2015-16.

What is included in the cost of the course?

One full week of face-to-face on campus taught sessions (week of 11th July 2016)
A one hour webinar each fortnight

Comprehensive on-line study notes
Course completion transcript

Are there any additional costs?

You may wish to purchase the recommended textbook and a graphical calculator

Does this course lead to an A level in mathematics?

No, this course is an introduction to some of the content of the mathematics A’ level course and does not lead to the full qualification. Delegates wishing to progress to the full A’ level will be advised of ways in which they may do this on application.

Is this a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course?

No, this course is not a replacement or equivalent of a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.
