Professor Geoffrey Howson received International Achievement Award in Mathematics Education

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Howson, honorary advisor of MSHE in mathematics education, has recently received the International Achievement Award in Mathematics Education presented by Teachers College, Columbia University, United States.  The Award was created by David Eugene Smith, who is considered one of the founders of the field of mathematics education in the US, and among its earlier recipients was Felix Klein (click for ICMI Felix Klein Medal).
Professor Howson has a distinguished career in mathematics and mathematics education including serving as the Secretary-General of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI) from 1983-1990. At the University of Southampton, he was a former Head of the Mathematics Department and later Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education. He was Honorary Chairman of the International Programme Committee for the inaugural International Conference on Mathematics Textbook Research and Development, which was held at Southampton in July 2014 and acclaimed as a great success. “We are very grateful to Geoffrey for his many invaluable contributions to the conference and we wish to send our heartfelt congratulations to him for being awarded the International Achievement Award in Mathematics Education”, said Professor Lianghuo Fan, Head of MSHE Research Centre.
