Professor Lianghuo Fan, Head of Mathematics, Science and Health Education Research Centre, has recently given seven invited presentations in several major universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Brazil, including East China Normal University (Shanghai), Fudan University (Shanghai), Beijing Normal University, University of Hong Kong, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and State University of Sao Paulo (UNSEP). These presentations focused on mathematics textbook research and development, teacher knowledge and professional development, comparative mathematics education and the influence of modern mathematics on mathematics education. They were in part based on Professor Fan’s latest research and publications in these areas including Investigating the pedagogy of mathematics: How do teachers develop their knowledge (by Imperial College Press, 2014; see earlier post) and How Chinese teach mathematics: Perspective from Insiders (by World Scientific, 2015; click here).

In addition, Professor Fan also gave a keynote speech at Shanghai Graduate Forum in Mathematics Education. The presentations were delivered during Professor Fan’s study leave at the invitation of these universities in May and June 2015 and attracted a large number of audiences. “I am delighted to have had the opportunities to share my research and understanding about a number of major issues in mathematics education I am interested in with colleagues in these universities, and I think I also learned a lot from them through exchanging ideas”, said Professor Fan.
