Able year 9 pupils from 4 local schools visited the university for a mathematics day run by the PGCE mathematics trainees. Pupils enjoyed a session on practical geometry finding the largest cylinder that can be made from a sheet of A4 paper, a pirate-themed mathematical treasure hunt and some outdoor mathematics activities, which included a simultaneous equations egg and spoon race! The day also included a short talk on the the value of taking A level mathematics. Pupils feedback from the included comments saying:
“my favourite session was outdoor maths because we don’t normally do maths outside”
“I am now considering doing A level maths”
“there are more exciting sides to maths”
“my favourite session was the treasure hunt because we were rewarded and it was fun”
