Loss of our colleague and friend Christine Keitel-Kreidt

We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our colleague and friend Christine Keitel-Kreidt, a leader in promoting mathematics education as an international research field. Most recently she was Professor emerita of Mathematics Education at the Freie University, Berlin, where she also served as Vice-President.

Christine started as research fellow in the 1970s at the renowned Max-Planck-Institute for Educational Research in Berlin, where she worked on theoretical and practical approaches to curriculum development. It was through her work on curriculum development that she began collaborating with Prof Geoffrey Howson here at Southampton. Some of that collaboration is capture in the classic book Curriculum Development in Mathematics (written along with Jeremy Kilpatrick). book

Christine’s engagement in mathematics education as an international research field was boundless; for example her editorial leadership and contributions in the International Handbooks in Mathematics Education. For many years, Christine was Vice-President and then President of the Commission Internationale pour l’Étude et l’Amélioration de l’Enseignement des Mathématiques (CIEAEM).

In 1999, Christine was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sciences by University of Southampton.
