Intern Update- The Planning Stage

Hi everyone!

Here’s another weekly update from the ICS Interns, Nancy and Caitlin. It’s been a busy week, with lots of researching, planning and organising the first stages of the ICS festival. Our main focus this week has been gathering our best ideas for the festival like what events we could put on, creating a brand and how we can make a name for ourselves. All of these initial thoughts will be presented to the LLAS staff and interns on Monday morning, so we’re spending this afternoon getting the last bits ready!

Luckily, on Thursday we had a welcome break from work, when we met with all of the LLAS team and the other former and current students that are also interning in our department. It was great to finally get the whole group together and share information about each other’s projects. We’re really looking forward to hearing about their projects’ progress, and on Monday everyone will be joining us for our presentation to see how far we’ve got. Earlier this week we also met Maddy, last year’s ICS intern, who is now working as the Welcome Programme Assistant with the International Office. We discussed links that we could establish between ICS and the International Office, and we hope to involve the pre-sessional students that Maddy works with in our preparation for the festival.

Stay tuned for our next update on Friday 17th!

ICS welcomes new interns

Hi all, I am Nancy, I just recently graduated with an Economic degree. I have organised a few cultural events such as “Global Village”, “International Cultural Night”, I am also going to be the International Student’s Officer next year. I am really excited to work with the ICS team this summer.

Hello everyone! My name is Caitlin and I too am a recent graduate and have just finished my degree in Spanish and Portuguese. Having spent my Year Abroad helping plan events with an environmental charity in Brazil, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to utilise the skills I gained over that period during my time with ICS.

Over the next 12 weeks, together we’ll be organising, planning and ultimately, in January 2016, delivering the Intercultural Connections Southampton Festival. Having both lived in Southampton for a number of years, we appreciate how culturally diverse both the city and the University of Southampton are, and are therefore really looking forward to putting on an event which will encourage intercultural exchanges and strengthen international ties across the community.  We’ll be posting about our progress every week, so make sure you keep up-to-date by checking this page every Friday!

Developing Intercultural Connections at Southampton University

Tuesday 28th April 9.00-16.30

The Intercultural Connections Southampton Conference is the first major event taking place as part of the Intercultural Connections Southampton project which started in autumn 2014. This project, funded by the university’s Education Enhancement Fund, aims to create a greater awareness of the range and potential of intercultural activities  in order to develop a more rounded profile for Southampton as an International University.

The conference will be a mixture of traditional presentations, workshops, demonstrations, interactive discussions and panels. We welcome papers from all students and staff, both Professional Services and academic staff.

The purpose of this conference is to provide opportunities for:

  • students and staff to share intercultural and international experiences and research at the university both inside and outside the classroom
  • develop new ideas to improve intercultural and international experiences for all
  • networking and forming collaborations across the university.
