ICS Workshop: “The Cultural Game”

We’d like to let you know about an upcoming workshop event: “The Cultural Game” which is running as part of the Intercultural Connections Project (ICS).

It will run from 6-8pm on Wednesday 2nd December on Highfield Campus, in room 54/8033 (Maths building).

The event will consist of:

  • Part 1: The Culture Card Game.
  • Short break
  • Part 2: What is Intelligence?

There will be free pizza (yes, you heard it!) between workshops and prizes for the winner!

The aim of the workshop is to explore how culture affects our perception, behaviour and how can we response to with such differences when interact with another culture. The event should be a fun way for you to get to know people, contribute to some really interesting discussions, and learn a little about what we mean with the words ‘intercultural’ and ‘intelligence’.

This workshop would be perfect for international students, home students who are considering studying or working abroad during their degree, modern languages students. Or, if you are someone who is interested in culture, very competitive; therefore want to challenge our cards game and intelligent test, and of course, treating yourself to pizza; you cannot miss this! The workshop would also be a great CV enhancer for anyone looking to work in a multicultural environment.

Places are limited so we recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment.

You can save your place on the workshop by registering via our Eventbrite page at http://interculturalconnectionssouthampton.eventbrite.co.uk.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Intern Update – Time to say Goodbye and Hello

Hi all from Nancy!

Last week was full of emotions and feelings for me, from saying goodbye to all of the interns that I have been working with throughout the summer, to welcoming all university students, both returning and new. Although it was already expected, it is really sad that Caitlin is no longer with us anymore. We’ve been there for each other and exchanged our crazy ideas. But don’t worry; she will come back for the festival!

It was also a very busy and exciting week for everyone. We had the bunfight (to which some of you may have been disappointed from the lack of buns involved!) and also the Fresher’s Fayre. We were with the Language Opportunity team; I hope you had the chance to visit our stall during the fayre. We are working very hard this year to prepare for the WOW festival, that’s why we are extremely happy to share to you that we will be collaborating with SUSU! Bring you an intercultural festival that is bigger, fuller and more vibrant.

I know the festival will not be here until the February of next year, but do spread the word. Time flies. As for now, I will continue to work with the project and also at the same time doing my Master’s degree.

Stay tune for the next update.

Intern Update- The end of the placement!

Hello from Caitlin!

It’s with great sadness that I write my final blog post as an intern with LLAS and the Intercultural Connections Project! I’ve had such a great summer with Ali, Nancy and all the LLAS team working on WOW Festival and I really hope that staff, students and Southampton locals alike will really enjoy the day when the event goes ahead on 6th February next year.

Over my time with LLAS I’ve had the opportunity to use a creative head to come up with over 30 different activities that will be put on at WOW Festival, employ some research tactics to ensure we were getting as many people involved in WOW as possible and communicate with other people as passionate about internationalisation as we at ICS are.

It’s been such a pleasure to work with such a dynamic, creative and motivated team and being in an office with such a high ratio of chocolate/biscuits/cakes to people didn’t hurt either!

Unfortunately the sweet stash shan’t be safe for long however as hopefully I’ll be popping back into the office a few times in the run-up to the Festival to help out where I can.

Stay tuned for more updates from Nancy!
