{"id":993,"date":"2012-05-15T20:07:10","date_gmt":"2012-05-15T20:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitaleconomy.soton.ac.uk\/?p=993"},"modified":"2014-01-29T08:35:06","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T08:35:06","slug":"southampton-hosts-rcuk-it-as-a-utility-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wsi\/southampton-hosts-rcuk-it-as-a-utility-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Southampton hosts RCUK Digital Economy &#8220;IT as a Utility&#8221; Network+"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many congratulations to Professor Jeremy Frey whose \u00a31.5 million Network+ award has now been announced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/newsevents\/pubs\/mags\/connect\/2012\/86\/Pages\/rcukdigitaleconomythemeawards.aspx\">RCUK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of a new way of better taking forward existing research and training investments the RCUK Digital Economy (DE) Theme has set up a network in each of its four priority challenge areas: IT as a Utility, Communities and Culture, New Economic Models and Sustainable Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach \u2018Network+\u2019 has received \u00a31.5 million funding over three years, with a broad scope that goes above and beyond the standard network remit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with the DE Theme objectives, each Network+ will focus on harnessing digital technologies to bring about transformational impact on community life, cultural experiences, future society, and the economy. They will co-create Grand Challenges, engage with and build communities, and inform the research agenda. A series of initial networking events in January 2012 specifically focused on the instigating the Network+ activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Network+ will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold \u2018standard\u2019 networking activities, including workshops, meetings and interactive forums<\/li>\n<li>Support N+N activities to bring together people and foster best+best interactions with UK and overseas groups<\/li>\n<li>Link to other RCUK-supported initiatives such as the AHRC-led Connected Communities Programme and the AHRC KE Hubs<\/li>\n<li>Make and maintain links with the full spectrum of industry and users, including the third sector<\/li>\n<li>Identify and prioritise the research and societal challenges in the appropriate DE Challenge Area and develop future Grand Challenges in the DE area. They will generate various reports and other outputs \u2013 for example, working with Government departments may help to inform and influence policy.<\/li>\n<li>Develop placements\/secondments, a big feature of each network, which will encourage ideas-generation and knowledge exchange between users and the knowledge base.<\/li>\n<li>Support up to 10 \u2018scoping study funds\u2019 per network, for prioritised activities at up to \u00a350,000 each.
