Two workshop events, featuring a panel of guest speakers,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444\">were\u00a0open to postgraduate and early career researchers working in the areas of image studies, visual culture, media and communications, and art and design.<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444\">\u00a0The project\u00a0<\/span>culminated in a launch event, at the British Library, for a collaboratively produced \u2018<a title=\"Looking at Images\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr\/looking-at-images\/\">Researcher\u2019s Guide<\/a>\u2019 e-book.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444\">As a <em>living archive<\/em>, this publication welcomes new article submissions at any time. See:\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #0da4d3\" title=\"Contributor Guidelines\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr\/contributor-guidelines\/\">Contributor Guidelines<\/a><span style=\"color: #444444\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While there has been an explosion of interest in visual culture and imaging techniques over the last few decades (both within and beyond the arts and humanities), support and skills development for Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers remain relatively limited. Training refers to visual methodologies, but often only to prompt caution in dealing with matters of copyright and ethics. What is missing is a more positive and challenging \u2018picture\u2019 of the image in and as research. The workshops provided places for a total of 70 participants from around the country to learn from each other\u2019s experiences and those of the invited speakers; to discuss methodological issues; and to work collaboratively to produce the\u00a0\u2018Researcher\u2019s Guide\u2019\u00a0as a resource for future use.\u00a0\u00a0The idea for\u00a0the overall\u00a0project<em>\u00a0<\/em>grew out of\u00a0three main influences:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444\"><b>(1)<\/b>\u00a0Marquard Smith (editor of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0da4d3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.journalofvisualculture.org\/\"><i>Journal of Visual Culture<\/i><\/a>) offered a key contribution to Winchester School of Art\u2019s Centre for Global Futures in Art, Design and Media, with a presentation about the \u2018image\u2019 of research. Subsequent discussion also informed WSA\u2019s Postgraduate Conference 2013, which identified a need in developing deep-level skills pertinent to understanding and handling the image\u00a0<i>in<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>as<\/i>\u00a0research across a range of areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444\"><b>(2)\u00a0<\/b>Approaches to thinking critically about images and image practices while\u00a0<i>simultaneously\u00a0<\/i>engaging with image-making processes has been difficult to formulate. Sunil Manghani\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0da4d3\" href=\"http:\/\/imagestudies.wordpress.com\/category\/blog\/\"><i>Image Studies<\/i><\/a>\u00a0(Routledge, 2013) is one key publication that speculates upon specific research tools and approaches for both obtaining and handling images (relating to issues of access, quality, ethics and intellectual property) and critiquing them (including the use of images as a means of critique). The book includes an \u2018<i>ecology of images\u2019<\/i>\u00a0diagram as a proposed research tool, with examples of its use to stimulate and enrich image research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444\"><b>(3)<\/b>\u00a0The recently launched\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0da4d3\" href=\"http:\/\/photomediationsmachine.net\/\"><i>Photomediations Machine<\/i>\u00a0<\/a>(a sister project to the online open access journal\u00a0<i>Culture Machine<\/i>) has renewed debates about the\u00a0<i>form<\/i>\u00a0of scholarly work.
