{"id":173,"date":"2015-01-30T18:02:17","date_gmt":"2015-01-30T18:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wsaopps\/?p=173"},"modified":"2016-01-04T16:55:14","modified_gmt":"2016-01-04T16:55:14","slug":"student-for-a-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/wsaopps\/student-for-a-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Student for a Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_WordSection1\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">During your visit to a school you will accompany a teacher to their classes and observe their teaching.\u00a0 There will be opportunities throughout the day for you to engage with the students and we encourage students to take along a portfolio of your work to share with the pupils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Some schools have specifically requested visits from male students<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0in order to inspire boys to study art;<\/span>\u00a0recently there has been a\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">significant dip in the number of boys taking art at GCSE level within Hampshire.\u00a0<\/span>WSA students who have visited schools last semester have observed photography, graphic design, fine art and textile lessons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Most schools are accessible by public transport and travel expenses will be reimbursed so long as travel tickets are retained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Email Sandra Dancer at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:foraday@soton.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">foraday@soton.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0 if you would like your name to be put forward, to one or more of these schools, for a visit this semester.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><i>Please include the following information in your email &#8211; CV &#8211; preference for visit (primary or secondary school) \u2013 do you have personal transport? \u2013 When you are available (specific days of week) &#8211; Which course you are studying at Winchester School of Art.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>[<em>The school I visited was just outside Southampton and the class was made up of 12 year old boys and girls. The school kindly introduced me as &#8216; The Artist&#8217; and I took some books with me, which I had marked up in response to an email brief on the project from the teacher. I spent two wonderful hours talking colour, composition and medium with the students. Then I returned this year to do the same thing again.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Student For A Day is a thoroughly enjoyable experience: even if you don&#8217;t want to teach. The children were so engaging and enquiring about art and artists and enthusiastic to try out new ideas.
