Student for a Day

During your visit to a school you will accompany a teacher to their classes and observe their teaching.  There will be opportunities throughout the day for you to engage with the students and we encourage students to take along a portfolio of your work to share with the pupils.

Some schools have specifically requested visits from male students in order to inspire boys to study art; recently there has been a significant dip in the number of boys taking art at GCSE level within Hampshire. WSA students who have visited schools last semester have observed photography, graphic design, fine art and textile lessons.

Most schools are accessible by public transport and travel expenses will be reimbursed so long as travel tickets are retained.

Email Sandra Dancer at foraday@soton.ac.uk  if you would like your name to be put forward, to one or more of these schools, for a visit this semester.

Please include the following information in your email – CV – preference for visit (primary or secondary school) – do you have personal transport? – When you are available (specific days of week) – Which course you are studying at Winchester School of Art.

[The school I visited was just outside Southampton and the class was made up of 12 year old boys and girls. The school kindly introduced me as ‘ The Artist’ and I took some books with me, which I had marked up in response to an email brief on the project from the teacher. I spent two wonderful hours talking colour, composition and medium with the students. Then I returned this year to do the same thing again.

Student For A Day is a thoroughly enjoyable experience: even if you don’t want to teach. The children were so engaging and enquiring about art and artists and enthusiastic to try out new ideas. Being able to contribute was very satisfying and I got a lovely thank you card as well, signed by all the children] -Student feedback
