Són Orchestra – Design Internship (InDesign Specialist)

We are launching a brand new, professional orchestra, based in Southampton. Called “són” – which means “sound” or “music” in Old English – we are the first and only pro orchestra for the city and the region. I’m a member of staff in the music department, in addition to conducting the Southampton University Symphony Orchestra.

The són launch event is on Sunday 29 November, in Turner Sims on the Highfield campus. Despite not being a University event, nor having any direct connections with the Uni, there are many tie-ups: we’ve already engaged two interns, both undergrads in the music department, who are themselves interns for other university projects, too: one is an iChamp (specialising in media, digital and marketing – and is our digital intern); the other is a Turner Sims marketing and advertising intern.

We are looking for a Design Intern to help in ensuring we have a strong, clean and professional image in all our print media – as we launch, and going forward. We need to produce posters, flyers, brochures and – this is currently the most pressing need – a full-colour, beautifully designed concert programme for our launch event. (Right now, as I write, this is our ONLY problem – posters and flyers have been dealt with.) As an organisation, we have good ideas about the tone and message of our print media, but need plenty of input and guidance to put it into effect. We would love to develop our approach with a gifted student who is also keen to gain experience and exposure in the music/arts field.

We are keen to produce a brochure which has a luxury, photo-rich look and feel to it. Content will come from us (curated from various sources) – what we’re looking for is someone who can work with us, perhaps side-by-side in the beginning, to put everything in place using Adobe InDesign. In return, we can ensure all travel and other expenses are covered, offer tickets to our events, including to the opening concert launch, and discuss other benefits as appropriate. Following the launch event in Nov, we have further events lined up for 2016 – education projects, further concerts and so on – and for all of this, we will continue to need and value the input from a design intern to guide us forwards.
