RBA Scholarships in Rome
The Royal Society of British Artists offer a scholarship in Rome for a month in July 2016 – this is open to young artists and new graduates [approx 3-4 years]. Twenty semi-finalists will have work shown in the Lloyd’s Register Gallery in the City of London, as part of the “RBA RISING STARS” show, where this year Michael Portillo will be opening the exhibition. From there, 4 finalists will also have work shown in the RBA Annual Exhibition in the Mall Galleries, where the winner will be announced.
The Award offers:
- Four weeks at Sala Uno, a highly prestigious gallery and international arts centre in the heart of Rome
- Accommodation is in a self-contained apartment, situated within a wonderful and extensive walled garden in the grounds of the gallery
- Studio space will be available within the gallery
- Half-board, breakfast and evening meal, is provided at a nearby restaurant
- Return flights are included
Conditions for entry:
- The competition opens on September 1st and closes on December 31st 2015
- The applicants’ work needs to be figurative
- The artists may be painters, printmakers or sculptors
- The applicants need to be in their final year or within 3 years of graduation
- Six images of recent work to be provided, by email to: mick.davies@virgin.net
Process for selection:
- Twenty artists will be chosen as semi-finalists from the entire entry
- The semi-finalists will be invited to show some of their work at our “RBA RISING STARS” exhibition, which will be held at The Gallery@Lloyd’s Register, in the City of London. This show will run for approximately 1 month, February to March 2016, and all works may be for sale [no commission taken by Lloyd’s or the RBA]
- From these, a shortlist of 4 finalists will then be invited to an interview at the Mall Galleries, in central London. These finalists will all have one work on show [and on sale] at the RBA Annual Exhibition in March and the winning candidate will be announced by the President of the RBA at the Private View
Guidelines:
- It may be helpful for the finalists to bring with them for interview any sketchbooks or journals which show their exploration of techniques or development of their ideas
- The Gallery at Lloyd’s Register is a wonderful exhibition space but, as it is used as a ‘walk through’ for the various businesses situated in the building, they request that naked forms or subject matter which may give offence to certain groups are not shown
- It is suggested that large scale works be accompanied by smaller works as, if the artist is chosen as a semi-finalist or finalist, exhibition space will be limited and this will influence selection
- Semi-finalists are responsible for the delivery and collection of their own works
