Hat Fair 2018 – Visual Artists

29thJune – 1stJuly 2018 sees the return of the hugely successful Hat Fair, a summer festival of local, national and international outdoor arts. Hat Fair is the UK’s oldest continuously running Outdoor Arts festival, staging family-friendly work which is free to attend. The hugely popular festival takes place at various locations across Winchester city centre and typically attracts 55,000 people over the course of the weekend.

For this year’s Hat Fair, we will collaborate with St John’s Charity Winchester to stage a special day-long ‘St. John’s Hat Fair Village Fete’ as part of the annual summer Hat Fair festival. We will open up the beautiful front gardens of the historic St. John’s Almshouses, to stage our ‘Fete’. The Fete will see an experienced professional visual artist and award-winning writer work with two mentored, paid student interns from University of Southampton / Winchester School of Art and St John’s residents in the weeks leading up to Hat Fair to create an interactive visual arts centrepiece for the Fete. This will celebrate older people’s lives and stories and enable Hat Fair to host the public in a calm, family-and older-person friendly area right in the heart of the city centre and festival map.

We are looking for two creative visual artists to work with local people to design and make the outdoor installation for the Village Fete.  The internships will be led by Theatre Royal Winchester/Hat Fair in collaboration with Winchester School of Art. The interns will be mentored by visual artist Kate Sully, Amy Pendry, Hat Fair Producer and Andrew Loretto, Hat Fair Director. The interns will also assist the team in evaluating the project in the week after Hat Fair weekend.
