IN 1989<\/span>, the Web was born to\u00a0make information-sharing a painless\u00a0way for scientists around the world, where\u00a0they could collaborate internationally on their research without boundaries[1]<\/a><\/sup>. Twenty six years later, the very same technology\u00a0had made someone’s day a painless one too (hopefully?), after gaining many “likes” from “friends” around the world for\u00a0sharing\u00a0some muscle pics on gym rituals, without “boundaries”.<\/p>\n

What is ‘oversharing’?<\/h4>\n

“to give other people too much information about yourself, or information that would normally be private,\u00a0especially on a\u00a0social networking website”<\/em>“overshare.” macmillandictionary.com. 2015.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/small><\/p>\n

Is that for real?<\/h4>\n

The following are examples of “freedom of expression” in social media which relate to oversharing, both in content (material) and in frequency. We might be amazed and questioning their surreality, but yes, they were really out there.<\/p>\n

When it all started?<\/h4>\n

IN 1919<\/span>, the (US) True Story[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0became the first\u00a0confession genre magazine,\u00a0which\u00a0published\u00a0anecdotal women experiences based on letters or professional writer submissions[13]<\/a><\/sup>. The magazine revealed early market interest on\u00a0social controversies and “irregularities”, which lead it into\u00a0best-seller\u00a0in 1930[14]<\/a><\/sup>. This perplexity could have been a great\u00a0benefactor\u00a0to\u00a0the expansion\u00a0of media\u00a0industries later. In 2005, OK!\u00a0magazine would willingly pay $3 million for Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher\u2019s wedding photos[15]<\/a><\/sup>\u2014imagine the demand for a\u00a0piece of personal-life information, especially on\u00a0celebrity! However, as society evolved, the stage with glowing spotlight\u00a0has no longer been exclusive to talented\u00a0figures. Nowadays, we could spot\u00a0on many\u00a0fresh faces exposing\u00a0their daily life in reality shows, “vlogs”[16]<\/a><\/sup>, or social media and ended up “famous for being famous”[17]<\/a><\/sup>. With the advancement of\u00a0technology and mobile device,\u00a0the opportunity to be recognised\u00a0is within the reach of\u00a0our fingertips,\u00a0and\u00a0this\u00a0is where “the magic” begins.<\/p>\n

Why do we ‘overshare’?<\/h4>\n

In 2014<\/span>, researchers at\u00a0Union College conducted surveys to study the\u00a0relation between user personality and social media engagement[19]<\/a><\/sup>. The research highlighted two different kinds of Facebook personality:\u00a0the\u00a0insecure\u00a0and the\u00a0extrovert.\u00a0Those who\u00a0felt\u00a0unloved turned to Facebook more often to seek consolation from comments, likes and feedback[20]<\/a><\/sup>. Meanwhile, those with\u00a0narcissistic tendencies are relatively frequent to post on\u00a0social media to demonstrate superiority over their peers, as\u00a0studied by\u00a0researchers at the University of Michigan[21]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n

How much is too much?<\/h4>\n

When posting to social media, there are two simple guidance to reflect on the stuff we\u00a0share: internal and external aftermaths. If our neurone reception doesn’t feel\u00a0to be\u00a0as strong as our internet signal at the moment, it is safer to cut off\u00a0our\u00a0online impulse\u00a0than to unleash cringe-worthy outbursts that we’ll regret later. According to recent research, average Britons committed at least 17 online sins they wish they hadn’t done and would frantically delete it at last, including raucous behaviour to soppy comments about someone[23]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n
