{"id":314,"date":"2015-11-05T17:31:59","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T17:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/webs6203\/?p=314"},"modified":"2015-11-05T17:47:36","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T17:47:36","slug":"the-mobile-web-just-shifting-the-digital-divide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/webs6203\/2015\/11\/05\/the-mobile-web-just-shifting-the-digital-divide\/","title":{"rendered":"The mobile web: just shifting the digital divide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have found the process of splurting my ideas on here, and pondering people&#8217;s comments, and also pondering other people&#8217;s ideas, quite enjoyable and useful so far. \u00a0I think I&#8217;ve been thinking too much as a teacher, as a &#8216;practitioner-researcher&#8217;, with the \u00a0mindset I&#8217;ve had when designing and engaging in\u00a0small action research projects over the last few years. \u00a0I need move away from that.\u00a0So,\u00a0here&#8217;s another stab at something:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The mobile web: just shifting the digital divide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There have been a lot of claims that mobile &#8216;closes the gap&#8217; or &#8216;bridges the digital divide&#8217;, and to a certain extent it does &#8211; it brings the Web to people and places it couldn&#8217;t reach before. But you can&#8217;t do everything on mobile, so mobile-only Web users are perhaps disadvantaged compared to people who use a variety of devices to access the Web (eg a laptop for certain tasks and a smartphone for others). \u00a0And who are mobile-only Web users?
