{"id":74,"date":"2014-10-16T08:47:50","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T08:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/annakentmuller.wordpress.com\/?p=115"},"modified":"2014-10-16T08:47:50","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T08:47:50","slug":"topic-1-my-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2033\/2014\/topic-1-2014\/2014\/10\/topic-1-my-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"Topic 1: My reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/annakentmuller.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/10\/topic-1-digital-visitors-and-residents\/\">post<\/a>:\u00a0<strong>Digital Visitors and Residents<\/strong>, my knowledge of\u00a0the topic has grown; through my interactions with other members of the group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jesspeacock.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/10\/topic-1-digital-visitors-and-residents\/\">Jessica&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0blog post reminded me that the birth of <strong>social media happened at the beginning of our generation-<\/strong>\u00a0for most of us, it was our earliest experience of digital residency. We also discussed the idea of researching further the theory: looking at personality, and other characteristics that might affect where people fall on White&#8217;s continuum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/annakentmuller.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/10\/topic-1-digital-visitors-and-residents\/\">Calum<\/a>, commenting on my blog post, discussed\u00a0the incompleteness of the model. We discussed what it means to be a\u00a0proficient web user, concluding\u00a0that it is\u00a0<strong>complicated to establish your proficiency in using the web<\/strong>: as it is likely to\u00a0vary on each\u00a0site you use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/annakentmuller.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/10\/topic-1-digital-visitors-and-residents\/\">Catherine<\/a>\u00a0asked the\u00a0question: <strong>&#8220;How can we ensure that \u2018residents\u2019 of the web are able to effectively co-partmentalise their social and institutional lives, so they don\u2019t become a blur?&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>This was fascinating to discuss, concluding with looking at having different social media accounts for personal and institutional use. We also discussed the concept of privatizing personal accounts, stopping institutional use. This made me think, should I separate my social from institutional lives on the web? Are we meant to lead these in separate ways?<\/p>\n<p>I also read <a href=\"http:\/\/lucyhewsy.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/08\/explain-the-concept-of-digital-visitors-and-residents-drawing-upon-your-reading-and-your-own-online-experiences-to-date-in-support-of-the-points-that-you-make\/#comments\">Lucy&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0blog post. She clearly shows the\u00a0evolution of Whites theory from\u00a0Prensky&#8217;s, showing\u00a0<strong>the limitations of Prensky&#8217;s model that lead to White&#8217;s theory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My knowledge\u00a0for this topic grew\u00a0through the\u00a0<strong>physical act of communicating with individuals on blog posts. <\/strong>I started to not just understand by also experience digital residency. I have started\u00a0to see a digital footprint being left behind me.
