The question, of course, is how does one take advantage of that situation? What makes\u00a0that &#8220;strong&#8221; identity a successful one?<\/p>\n<h4>UoSM2033 Topic 3:\u00a0Discuss the ways in which an authentic online professional profile can be developed<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There are countless ways to develop one&#8217;s online profile &#8211; as\u00a0it is pertinent to myself, I shall be covering how an independant musician\u00a0could develop theirs.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>AIMS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Take a look at these two videos:<\/p>\n<p><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='800' height='480' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YNM9kA1bSHk?version=3&#038;rel=1&%23038;fs=1&%23038;showsearch=0&%23038;showinfo=1&%23038;iv_load_policy=1&%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span>\u00a0<span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='800' height='480' src='http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8mkuIP_i3js?version=3&#038;rel=1&%23038;fs=1&%23038;showsearch=0&%23038;showinfo=1&%23038;iv_load_policy=1&%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both videos feature people who have been extremely successful because of their online profiles. Gary Vaynerchuk&#8217;s success has allowed him to expand his persona into a public\u00a0brand (enabling him to continue to create new media, publish books etc.) whilst MatPat&#8217;s Game Theory series served as an online portfolio\u00a0and enabled him to secure a job.<\/p>\n<p>I would argue that a successful independent musician requires even greater interplay between their online profiles and offline selves than the above two examples; instead of selling yourself as a product to companies, you are selling your music, as an extension of yourself, to your audience, the general public.<\/p>\n<p>As I stated in my <a href=\"https:\/\/mistmanx.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/02\/identity-crisis-a-reflection\/\">last reflection<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The objectives\u00a0of the online artist&#8230; should be audience expansion and audience retention.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_155\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mistmanx.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/feedback-loop-1.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-155 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mistmanx.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/feedback-loop-1.png?w=800\" alt=\"Feedback Loop\"   \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 1: The Audience Feedback Loop<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Figure 1 shows my diagram of my concept of the &#8220;Feedback Loop&#8221;; it displays the four main ways a musician develops a relationship with their audiences, and how they all &#8220;Feed Back&#8221; into one another. The\u00a0main aim is to create as much flow around the diagram as possible, which\u00a0<strong>expands <\/strong>and<strong> retains <\/strong>your audience by engaging them. If your music is good, then your performances and merchandise should speak for themselves; however,\u00a0your online presence\u00a0intrinsically connects your Profile and Interaction. So, how do we make this a positive impact?<\/p>\n<h5><strong>BUILDING BRAND<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As\u00a0Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic states in his article, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/01\/the-future-of-you\">The Future of You<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are all individuals, but unless we are also a brand, our individuality will be invisible. Being a brand means showcasing that which makes you special, in a way that is distinctive (recognizable), predictable (consistent), and meaningful (it allows others to understand what you do and why).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, how do we manage this? Let us take the example of Adam Pacitti&#8217;s infamous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adampacitti.com\/employadam\/\">EmployAdam<\/a>\u00a0campaign. A large part of its success, as\u00a0Art Jonak states in <a href=\"http:\/\/simplesells.tumblr.com\/post\/39581510026\/employadam\">his analysis<\/a> of the campaign, is that &#8220;Simple Sells&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I keep to this mantra by employing the same set of graphics across my\u00a0online profiles (See Fig. 2 &amp; 3), even using the same Black and White colour scheme. You have to let your profile do the same: with dedicated platforms like YouTube and Bandcamp being easily integrated\u00a0into websites like Facebook and Twitter, there&#8217;s no excuse not to.<\/p>\n<p>The music\u00a0industry is not the same as it once was. People want to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadbandchoices.co.uk\/news\/2013\/05\/piracy-downloads-130315\">try before they buy<\/a>&#8221; (Hill). The record companies are not the most important ears your music needs to reach any more. Your audience\u00a0NEED\u00a0to be able to hear your music.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>BEING GENUINE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It is, however, important that your social media does not appear to just be an online marketing campaign. Ari Herstand raises a number of good points in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/permalink\/2014\/07\/08\/10-reasons-band-failing-social-media\">his article<\/a>, but of most interest is the last point, in which he states, &#8220;fans want to get to know you on an intimate level. They want to live vicariously through you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst that last sentence is perhaps on the extreme end of this thinking, it is important that your personality comes through in your profiles; this is why I don&#8217;t hesitate to tweet about Formula One or Video Games, and why\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jorgenmunkeby\">J\u00f8rgen Munkeby&#8217;s Twitter profile<\/a> is one of my favourite (See Fig. 5). When he tweets or retweets about spam email, memorial concerts or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jorgenmunkeby\/status\/518484110990659585\">strange art in his hotel<\/a>, it expands his personality beyond that of the<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Singer\/saxophonist\/guitarist\/composer for the Norwegian Blackjazz band [Shinng]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>making him more relatable and engaging his audience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_165\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mistmanx.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/jorgenmunkeby.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-165 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mistmanx.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/jorgenmunkeby.png?w=800&#038;h=832\" alt=\"J\u00f8rgen Munkeby on Twitter\"   \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Fig. 5: J\u00f8rgen Munkeby on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jorgenmunkeby\">Twitter <\/a>(08\/11\/2014)<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<h5><strong>INTERACTING<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Ultimately, Social Media is just that; social. There are numerous articles that tackle this issue, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypebot.com\/hypebot\/2014\/03\/10-secrets-of-social-media-for-musicians.html\">Dave Kusek&#8217;s<\/a> on Hypebot to <a href=\"http:\/\/cyberprmusic.com\/2013\/08\/15\/are-you-guilty-4-ways-indie-musicians-are-killing-social-media\/\">Joshua Smotherman&#8217;s<\/a> on Cyber PR Music. The benefits of interacting openly with your followers are varied: it adds a personal touch, it allows you to get instant feedback and, perhaps most importantly, it forms a community around you and your music.<\/p>\n<p>The band hAND, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/handtheband\/\">on Twitter<\/a>, have an excellent conversational style which actively invites interaction from fans (See Fig. 6). Take, for instance, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heavyblogisheavy.com\/2014\/01\/29\/new-collaboration-featuring-ihsahn-devin-townsend-and-jorgen-munkeby\/\">news article<\/a>\u00a0by Damien Leech on Heavy Blog is Heavy, which reflects brilliantly on Townsend, Munkeby, Ihsahn and even myself, even if the mentioned collaboration has not happened (yet). It is a piece of content that has been created by a member of the artists&#8217; communities, from the artists&#8217; interactions with their communities, and\u00a0creates\u00a0excitement, interest and engagement.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>References &amp; Bibliography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Burgess, C.
