First of all, what does \u2018authentic\u2019 mean, and how (and where) can you create online professional profiles?<\/p>\n<p>Oxford Dictionaries defines being authentic: to be something genuine, based on facts, accurate or reliable (Accessed March 2014).<\/p>\n<p>Social networking sites such as <a href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\/\" >LinkedIn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.com\/\" >WordPress<\/a> (or other blog sites) and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\" >Twitter<\/a>\u00a0are some online sites where you can share information, thoughts, visions and experiences with an audience. These days, creating a professional network is even more important than ever, with a more competitive job market, and it is a good way to create contacts and stand out from the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Creating your online presence, and even better &#8211; your <i>professional<\/i> online presence, is a great way to show future employers who you really are, your skills, your education and your experiences. LinkedIn for an example is like an online CV, and on some recruiting pages you can apply with your LinkedIn profile. (Have a read about this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recruiter.com\/i\/apply-with-linkedin-button\/\" >here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>What you <strong>shouldn&#8217;t<\/strong>\u00a0do on pages like LinkedIn: (Hyams, C. 2012)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a non-professional profile picture<\/li>\n<li>Lie<\/li>\n<li>Send invitations to connect with LinkedIn\u2019s default text or using the \u2018friend\u2019 option<\/li>\n<li>Not provide links to your other online social network profiles \u2013 you\u00b4ve got nothing to hide, right?<\/li>\n<li>Leave your profile incomplete<\/li>\n<li>Share the exact same \u2018message\u2019 on all of your profiles<\/li>\n<li>Spam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, you <b>should<\/b> follow these tips: (The Guardian, 2013)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A professional looking profile picture preferably used on other social media pages so you are easily recognized online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide links on your LinkedIn profile to connect all of your online social networking profiles to create an authentic, trustworthy online professional \u2018identity\u2019 (make sure you\u2019ve got nothing to hide first).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>When connecting with new people online, you should take the time to write why you want to connect with them, and if you met them on a professional seminar\/conference \u2013 do not invite them to be your \u2018friends\u2019, &#8211; you have a professional relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You should complete your profile 100%, LinkedIn for an example, will guide you through the steps to making your profile complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\">Especially when applying for a role within marketing, you should brand yourself as you would brand products online. Now a days, the main focus in marketing is about \u2018content marketing\u2019, make sure everything out there supports the same message about you, to create an \u2018authentic online professional profile\u2019. Your tweets, status updates etc., should support the same message, but the content should be presented differently on the different pages \u2013 think about what you are posting before actually posting it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quote about the importance of authenticity to build brands, and in the job market, we as humans, are also brands that needs our own brand image. (Access more quotes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/tag\/authenticity\" >here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/tag\/authenticity\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63\" title=\"Click the image to access more quotes\" alt=\"authenticity quote\" src=\"https:\/\/kayastefferud.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/authenticity-quote.png?w=300&#038;h=55\" width=\"300\" height=\"55\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because LinkedIn (as an example) have become a very important factor of today\u2019s recruitment market, it is very important to follow the tips given to create an <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">authentic<\/span> online professional profile.
