{"id":87,"date":"2015-02-07T12:32:26","date_gmt":"2015-02-07T12:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tamaramanton.wordpress.com\/?p=3"},"modified":"2015-02-07T12:32:26","modified_gmt":"2015-02-07T12:32:26","slug":"digital-residents-and-digital-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2008-2015\/2015\/02\/07\/digital-residents-and-digital-immigrants\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Residents and Digital Immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The concept of Visitors and Residents was developed by David White and Alison Le Cornu:<br \/>\n\u2022 The <strong>Resident<\/strong> is an individual who collaborates and contributes online, establishing a permanent online presence.<br \/>\n\u2022 The <strong>Visitor<\/strong> is an individual who uses the web as a functional tool and leaves little trace behind them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">This is a different vision to Prensky\u2019s concept of \u2018natives\u2019 (those who were born into the digit age) and \u2018immigrants\u2019 (those who weren\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In terms of culture and activities this translates to:<br \/>\n\u2022 For the Resident THE INTERNET IS A PLACE \u2013 where they interact with others and spend time developing their online persona.<br \/>\n\u2022 For the Visitor THE INTERNET IS A TOOL \u2013 they do not participate in online culture; instead using the internet to find data, pay bills, make bookings, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The basic concepts can be seen on David White\u2019s YouTube video:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='656' height='399' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sPOG3iThmRI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;%23038;fs=1&#038;%23038;showsearch=0&#038;%23038;showinfo=1&#038;%23038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">However, people can have different relationships with the internet in their professional and personal lives. Interestingly, YouTube can be used by companies, professional and personal interactions, for example, this video shows Malvern Instruments using the YouTube to communicate with its customers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='656' height='399' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yrmnied14mw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;%23038;fs=1&#038;%23038;showsearch=0&#038;%23038;showinfo=1&#038;%23038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The Visitor \/ Resident classification is not necessarily linked with age, so the young are not always Residents. Similarly, Residents don\u2019t necessarily know how to effectively use the internet. For instance, one of the concerns that has been expressed is the naive way some people place too much trust with what they see online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Residence \u2260 evaluation and critical skills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Patrick Wilson, in his book <em>Second Hand Knowledge,<\/em> (Praeger, 1983), p15 notes that:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<li>Until the end of the twentieth century the primary source of information was published books that were subject to professional review before publication.<\/li>\n<li>The internet requires no professional review. Instead whether it is \u2018liked\u2019 and appears on search engine returns is based on criteria such as appearance, sponsorship, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Many have emphasised the need to establish information\u2019s <em>credibility<\/em> before accepting its views. \u201cThe notion of credibility has two components: Competency and trustworthiness\u201d Wilson, 1983.
