But while it\u2019s encouraged to share your thoughts, there\u2019s an increasing risk of identity theft. Twitter allows users to a certain a sense of anonymity where users can create \u2018fake\u2019 accounts to abuse others [1].<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt has given a voice to people who have often felt excluded and powerless. It has facilitated entertainment, argument, gossip and abuse.\u201d [2]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Identity theft is one of the most significant ethical issues concerning social media today. Users who are frequently sharing sensitive information online remain an easy target for \u2018Catfishing.\u201d Leah Palmer, real name Ruth Palmer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-31710738\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-31710738<\/a>) was a victim of <strong>\u2018Catfishing\u2019<\/strong>. She openly shared private pictures on an unprotected Instagram account before someone created a fake account pretending to be Ruth, cyber-dated at least 6 men and portrayed Ruth\u2019s husband as a \u201cpsychotic ex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Watch to learn a little more about \u201cCatfishing\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='560' height='315' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_rm_uo3kc2M?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;%23038;fs=1&#038;%23038;showsearch=0&#038;%23038;showinfo=1&#038;%23038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Recently, I\u2019ve seen many people sharing images on Instagram via a fake account replicating \u2018Nike, Adidas, Emirates etc\u2019 assuming they\u2019re taking part in a company competition. Creating a fake account on Instagram takes less than a minute and this is a huge concern for businesses using social media.<\/p>\n<p>Hoaxes such as the following: (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.traveller.com.au\/thousands-fall-for-fake-emirates-instagram-competition-2dual\">http:\/\/www.traveller.com.au\/thousands-fall-for-fake-emirates-instagram-competition-2dual<\/a>) lure na\u00efve users into following, sharing and promoting a fake business account leaving the authentic one to deal with customer complaints. The competition promised a free flight to Dubai and managed to gather over 10, 000 followers.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2018Catfishing\u2019 isn\u2019t the only issue \u2013 Facebook and Instagram users are also unknowingly agreeing to share personal information with third parties. Facebook\u2019s policy clearly states: \u201cWe transfer information to vendors, service providers, and other partners who globally support our business\u201d, yet many users are unaware their personal information is being shared across the world.
