{"id":1184,"date":"2015-05-03T13:30:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-03T13:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hhayleymatthews.wordpress.com\/?p=77"},"modified":"2015-05-03T13:30:28","modified_gmt":"2015-05-03T13:30:28","slug":"topic-5-the-swings-and-roundabouts-of-open-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2008-2015\/2015\/05\/03\/topic-5-the-swings-and-roundabouts-of-open-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Topic 5: The Swings and Roundabouts of Open Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This topic aims to look into \u2018Open Access\u2019, the advantages and disadvantages of being able to access various materials online freely.<\/p>\n<p>I have been very adventurous this week and created a Prezi Presentation (click on the image below) highlighting the effects of \u2018Open Access: Academic Journals\u2019 and a PowToon describing open access in regards to Spotify and the music industry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/qhiux_19zcze\/?utm_campaign=share&amp;utm_medium=copy\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-79 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hhayleymatthews.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/05\/screen-shot-2015-05-03-at-14-17-42.png?w=434&#038;h=292\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-05-03 at 14.17.42\" width=\"434\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Millions of academic journals are published every year, as a student it is unlikely that I will be able to read my field&#8217;s most up to date and relevant articles. This is not only due to the vast number of journals published, but also the lack of access to the majority of these articles.<\/p>\n<p>I was na\u00efve in thinking that my University had open access to all the journal articles I needed. It wasn\u2019t until I began research on my dissertation, that I realised that the University only has access to a small proportion of the articles I required. PLOS (2015) discusses the process institutions go through in order to gain site license and re-use of its content. In fact, the Higher Education Funding Council for England has announced that UK research after April 2016, must be open access otherwise it won\u2019t qualify for funding (The Guardian, 2014). Having open access to music is also an interesting topic.
