That’s a bit of a lie because you can get far. It just takes twice as long! Semester 1 of my first year is over and I can only say it’s been an enjoyable, albeit a stressful experience.

Firstly, writing is not my forte and hence I’ll probably keep my first blog short! I think I’ll start on the joys of the self-taught maths. It’s great! Most of the first semester’s math was simply an extension on A-level maths and anybody that has studied further maths at A-level will find this a breeze. There are six subject modules, with one of them being maths; the other five all have a set of ‘hands on’ labs that count towards the final grade. The labs are pretty fun and it’s satisfying when you apply knowledge from the lectures to one of your circuits… and it works! The rest of the modules in semester 1 (circuit theory, C++ programming, engineering challenges, logic circuit design and solid state design) are linked together well, and you’ll find yourself applying bits of each module in one of the others.

It’s worth mentioning that C++ programming and engineering challenges are purely coursework; with engineering challenges including a ‘hands on’ group project which was extremely fun and allowed me to get to know the people in my group really well.

Electronic Engineering at Southampton is currently the top course in the country according to the tables – numbers aren’t normally everything, but in this case – NUMBER 1!! Later this month I’m off to three interviews for a chance at a summer internship (paid) at either Npower, EON or Rolls Royce. The Power Academy is a scheme that is recruiting undergrads in order to secure a future workforce for the power industry. Whatever their reasons it’s good money. Employers appear to be very keen to employ people on this course and that can only mean good things for us.

Well, as a brief summary of Semester 1 I think that covers most things electronics related – if you want to know about the rest of uni life there is a myriad of information on the Southampton uni website. Feel free to contact me using the attached email whether it’s about applying, interviews, the course or just general uni life – I’ll answer honestly, honest!

In life procrastination never really gets you that far.
