There I saw Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web – very exciting indeed. In fact, I even spoke to him and asked, “How do you feel about the non-conformance of W3C Standards with Internet Explorer?”, to which he replied, “Well, I will be using more and more SVGs [Scalable Vector Graphics] … if you’re using Internet Explorer, you won’t be able to see these pretty pictures”. In the question time, he also briefly endorsed Linux Ubuntu which I was pleased about as I use an Ubuntu-based operating system, Linux Mint. I also had some delicious cakes and coffee, and saw a bit of London for the second time in my life! Not bad for a free day out.

I think the takeaway message of the Web Science panel event was that there is a plethora of data out there on the internet which we can use in many useful and analytical ways. Furthermore, the study of the Web is not just about the technical aspects, but also the social, economic, legal, ethical, philosophical and psychological aspects. You hear it a lot, but it is something which really has changed the world in one way or another, which makes it a possible option for me to do a PhD in. Of course, I have four years to decide.

Yet another Jiu Jitsu grading is coming up. I’m taking my orange belt (2nd belt) exam on Thursday – hopefully I will still be alive by the end of it! I do enjoy it though and it teaches me to have discipline and endurance.

The job at ECS Helpdesk is going swell. So far there haven’t been any queries raised by students to me that I haven’t been able to answer, at least, I have managed to contribute in one way or another. One query I had was “Can you compare two-dimensional arrays in Java using ‘.equals()’ function?” My response was “possibly, though it would be safer to check every individual element against each other”. While this may have a time complexity of O(n), it is probably the only way to make sure two arrays are equal in terms of elements. I also had to replace a printer toner cartridge, which while maybe a trivial thing, is certainly a skill that people will love you for on project hand-in day!

I’ve had an exciting day going up to London to the Royal Society to attend a Web Science panel.
