What I’m getting at is this: there are so many fields us ECS-graduates can go into afterwards, I have no idea where/what I will be doing when I graduate. This occurred to me as I was round a friend’s house for dinner the other night and they said they were graduating in about half a year or so. Blimey. Whilst our course covers a lot of ground and in reasonable depth, I still feel like at times, it merely scratches the surface because Computer Science is a huge subject. In all honesty, I wouldn’t mind emigrating after I graduate. Maybe to somewhere like Canada, Florida or possibly even Singapore. The only qualms I have I guess would be leaving my family and friends behind here, and of course, a potential future girlfriend. But then, what would life be without risk? I think I would like to travel a bit because in my earlier teenage days, the only two countries I have ever been to are France and Greece (very nice countries though). And you’re only young once.

So, Web Science? Artificial Intelligence? Computer Security? Distributed Networks? Who knows, I could be anywhere, but hey, I am open to offers…

Lucky for me, I am doing a Masters of Engineering, which means I have a further 2 years here, but for some of my friends, it means they will be graduating in a year and a half. Of course, the reason I am doing a Masters is to get my Chartered Engineer (CEng) honorific. And to get some more experience and ideas about what I want to do when I leave. Don’t get me wrong though, I am not afraid of the “real world”, and in fact, I am looking forward to earning some seriously good money and living the dream and all that jazz. But I want a job which will be interesting and fulfilling too…

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of this, but there’s this thing called the Paradox of Choice, which is where so many choices to make can cause anxiety and possibly result in no choice being made.
