Many opportunities all at once

It is funny how when the mind is consistently focussed on what it wants, an endless stream of opportunities seems to materialise from nowhere. This effect has been described as the law of attraction in various online circles and takes a different form depending on who describes it. The gist of it seems to be that the ideas you hold on to intently gradually become self-fulfilling prophecies.

I’ve been thinking about how to get my own business up and running. I have held on to this dream for about a year now, but only recently started trying to do something about it. During the month of January, I started to see a lot of opportunities appearing and I have done my best to grab onto some of the better ones.

In early January, Joyce Lewis, the school PR manager told me about a small start-up company looking for help with their website. Since I have some experience in that area, I asked for their details and got in contact. I am now in the process of researching tools, designing the unifying theme and looking into market rates for pricing.

I have also been writing a lot this year and pooling ideas for future blog posts and other articles. My brain has been very kind to me since Christmas so I am doing my best to record all the ideas it spits out and develop the best ones into plans for action. For example, I recently wrote an article on overcoming performance anxiety, which I intend to develop into something a bit bigger before deciding what exactly to do with it.

My focus on recording and using my ideas has also overflowed into my interests outside of academia. I have been writing about my experience in the martial arts and planning how to use that work as well.

In the school, there has been some talk of establishing a spin-out organisation to cater to the needs of the many companies that contact us looking for ECS students to work on projects. If it goes forward, this could grow into a very exciting opportunity for the students, covering the freelance role that isn’t really dealt with by our careers portal. Needless to say, I will be getting involved with that if and when it starts to get off the ground.
