Second Semester and a Summer Job

OK so it’s been nearly six months since I last wrote here. It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for the last five of them but never quite made it to doing – hence, now the exams are less than a week away, it’s an obvious thing to do!!
Maybe I’ll come back and say something different next week, but thus far I’ve really enjoyed the last semester – most of the modules were interesting, five of pure computing and one of … important, useful skills which I’m sure can be applied to many aspects of my later career … yeah, that 🙂
The two main programming modules have been the most interesting. One is purely coursework so we were asked to design a Fractal viewer (Google it!!) as well as an app which let you play a crossword. They were simple to get working but the fun bit was exploring all the different ways of doing things and trying out bits of code to see if they worked, even if they didn’t make it into the final thing. One of the best things about Computer Science rather than another subject is that there’s no right answer, so you can just play with things and see what works/what comes out better – get me help if you like, but I think it’s hours of free fun!!
The second awesome thing about this semester was being offered a summer internship at Ericsson Television. I went to the careers fair and left loads of contact details, followed up with many CVs and eventually heard back from some of the companies I wanted to. So I’ll be working on the Science Park from June to September – not sure what projects yet, but if you’re watching live broadcast TV in a few years, I like to think that a few lines of the code that bring it to your screen will be mine!! I’ll probably blog about it so watch out for it if you want to know what I get up to.
I want to write more, but I should probably go back to learning how to prove the correctness of loops – there is a mathematical basis to proving you will, eventually, be forced to call that “break” statement!!
