The Second Year of an Electronic Engineering student is synonymous with slow torture(that you somewhat enjoy!). After all, we have just begun our second week and already, the work has been heaped upon us. Last year, after we were forced to become code-breaking experts to be employed in WW1 (the type of encoding we were tackling was popular then); I thought that I could finally bid adieu to my worst nemesis – Programming. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side, as the very first assignment given to us involved just that. Only this time round, we get to pretend we’re making some Quantum computer. I have to admit, it sounds exciting, in an ECS kind of way. But the fact that it’s worth 30% of our module and we have 2 and a half weeks to do it in? Not so fun.
I know what you’re thinking, she’s making a mountain of a molehill, exaggerating to the extreme. I only wish. On top of that, we’ve already started our labs. The first of many, is a team design exercise. Which, admittedly, is fun. After all, when you’re one of approximately 92 students, the chance of you working with every single one of them is pretty slim. This exercise allowed me to work with ‘new’ people. The only problem? It’s very long and requires a lot of work outside of the lab itself. So, what with the Software assignment, the lab and my new resolution to be more active outside of ECS, I’m surprised I even have the time and energy to type this out!
All of this said, I think I’m going to enjoy my second year ten times as much as my first year. The course seems much more interesting, with the topics more practical and intertwining than ever before. Also, the labs/group assignments sound like a lot of fun; from what I’ve heard from the current 3rd years, they had to design something similar to a Game Boy. While a monster of a task, nothing could be more exciting! I think I’ve finally stepped into the real Electronics. 🙂
Until next time, bye!
(And hopefully, I won’t neglect my blog as much this year round!)
