{"id":2210,"date":"2015-04-28T17:33:53","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T17:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/?p=2210"},"modified":"2015-05-01T09:25:54","modified_gmt":"2015-05-01T09:25:54","slug":"its-more-than-facebook-online-social-networks-with-interesting-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/2015\/04\/28\/its-more-than-facebook-online-social-networks-with-interesting-features\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s more than Facebook &#8211; Online Social Networks with Interesting Features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2621 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4-433x300.jpg 433w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/d1e692d8519aa2383569d367e7eb58d4.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years the\u00a0online world has been dominated by few large social networks whereas there are many more &#8211; some targeted at specific communities or completely niche but with unique features.\u00a0Here, we picked 8 Online Social Networks, both those commonly known and those less popular, but all\u00a0with some interesting functionalities that could be incorporated into our Small.World project:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/about_me.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/about_me.png\" alt=\"about_me\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"About.me\" href=\"https:\/\/about.me\/\" target=\"_blank\">About.me<\/a> &#8211; an online identities platform features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"pl\">One-page user profiles with short biographies<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, linked to all other <\/span><span lang=\"pl\">social networks<\/span> <span lang=\"pl\">associated with the member.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>While About.me works more like a personal website, Small.World takes an advantage of using Facebook &amp; Google+ accounts but it&#8217;s a fully operating social network itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/asmallworld.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/asmallworld.png\" alt=\"asmallworld\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"AsmallWorld\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asmallworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"pl\">AsmallWorld <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8211; an exclusive travel and social club network, based on small worlds concept. A slight coincidence with our project&#8217;s name&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span lang=\"pl\">Personal<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ised<\/span><span lang=\"pl\"> travel advice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Members-e<\/span><span lang=\"pl\">xclusive events.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"pl\">Membership on recommendation only, capped at <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">250,000 users.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Our service also uses travel advice but it will always be given by your trustees. And the membership is not exclusive at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/coachsurfing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2213\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/coachsurfing-300x96.png\" alt=\"coachsurfing\" width=\"75\" height=\"24\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/coachsurfing-300x96.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/coachsurfing-500x160.png 500w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/coachsurfing.png 571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 75px) 100vw, 75px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Couchsurfing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.couchsurfing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"pl\">Couchsurfing <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8211; a hospitality exchange social network.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Private hosts met travellers.<\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Strongly b<\/span><span lang=\"pl\">ased on recommendation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">More than trust &#8211; i<\/span><span lang=\"pl\">n the past there was a credit card and address verification.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A question of trust is taken very seriously by Small.World. Our members recommend places but more importantly they recommend people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/diaspora.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/diaspora-300x80.png\" alt=\"diaspora\" width=\"90\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Diaspora \" href=\"https:\/\/diasporafoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"pl\">Diaspora <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8211; a general purpose, distributed social networking service.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Decentralised (data stored on local servers).<\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"pl\">Members can add different aspects of their lives and share certain posts\/events\/etc. <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">o<\/span><span lang=\"pl\">nly with people associated with certain aspect (e.g.. job-related <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">posts\/events <\/span><span lang=\"pl\">with colleagues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Just like in Diaspora, in Small.World posts are contextual. The main difference is that the context is always geographical, i.e. related to the particular location.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/fotki.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/fotki.png\" alt=\"fotki\" width=\"48\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Fotki\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fotki.com\/%20\" target=\"_blank\">Fotki<\/a> &#8211; a large media sharing social networking website.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highly customisable layout (skins and manually changed colours).<\/li>\n<li>RSS feeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Small.World does use feeds but they are only feeds from your friends or mutual friends of yours. Small.World aims for\u00a0simplicity\u00a0and consistency. Users can choose from several colour themes but nothing more as cross-compatibility is the priority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/foursquare.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/foursquare.png\" alt=\"foursquare\" width=\"20\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Foursquare\" href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Foursquare<\/a> &#8211; a search and discovery service for mobile devices.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Short tips on locations.<\/li>\n<li>Search locations in surrounding area by tastes. &#8216;Tastes&#8217; serve as\u00a0 attributes e.g. for restaurants this would display the ones that are good for karaoke, ice cream, steaks or so. Time of the day would trigger different results, e.g. restaurants serving breakfast in the morning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Using the similar concept, both tips and &#8220;tastes&#8221; in Small.World are fuelled by your friends only. We believe that the community can provide you with the best tips, recommendations and other information you need.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/glympse.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2228\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/glympse-300x300.png\" alt=\"glympse\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/glympse-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/glympse-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/glympse.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 24px) 100vw, 24px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Glympse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glympse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glympse<\/a> &#8211; a mobile platform for tracking people to meet up with.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Real time friends tracking with detailed information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Glympse is technically not a full-blown social network. Small.World has similar friend tracking built-in as a part of a comprehensive service.\u00a0Our tracking gives you only the information you need. And it&#8217;s more secure &#8211; you can track groups of users but they will always be people you really know.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/linkedin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/smallworld\/files\/2015\/04\/linkedin.png\" alt=\"linkedin\" width=\"27\" height=\"24\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"LinkedIn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"pl\">Lin<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ke<\/span><span lang=\"pl\">dIn <\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8211; popular professional, business-oriented network.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span lang=\"en-GB\">Members can see<\/span><span lang=\"pl\"> the degree to which <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">they <\/span><span lang=\"pl\">are connected to each other<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">,<\/span><span lang=\"pl\"> with common characteristics such as location, skills or <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Members can see who viewed their profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>LinkedIn shows interrelations in the sidebar panel.
