We will compare and contrast different Caribbean colonies and examine key moments in the history of slavery, abolition and emancipation between the middle of the eighteenth century and the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.<\/p>\n<p>The events below are listed in no particular order. Part of our task in this session will be to create a timeline by putting these into chronological order.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abolition of the Slave Trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>William Wilberforce\u2019s first speech in parliament<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tackey\u2019s Revolt in Jamaica<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lord Mansfield\u2019s Somerset verdict<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sam Sharpe\u2019s Rebellion (\u2018Baptist War\u2019) in Jamaica<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Founding of Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Creation of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Emancipation Bill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These books provide helpful overviews of events associated with slavery, resistance, abolitionism and emancipation in the British Caribbean:<\/p>\n<p>Anstey, R. <em>The Atlantic Slave Trade and British Abolition 1760-1810<\/em> (1975).<\/p>\n<p>Blackburn, R. <em>The Overthrow of Colonial Slavery<\/em> (1988).
