The unique selling point (USP) of Skillted is its geolocation functionality. Geolocation is the identification of the geographic location of an object such as a mobile phone. The geolocation functionality makes the Skillted app different from existing and similar tools.
The geolocation functionality works this way: it pinpoints the location of Skillted users and identify users with similar skills or required skills in the users vicinity.
However with using this functionality comes the question of privacy. At the moment, some apps which use this functionality do actually pass on location data to third parties without the consent of the individuals concerned. As location data could potentially reveal more sensitive data about a user, care must be taken to make sure the data is stored securely and do not get in the wrong hands.
In Europe, geolocation data has been classed as personal data by the WP29 which is comprised of representatives from the European Union member states data protection authorities, the European Data Protection Supervisor and the European Commission.
As part of the user registration for Skillted, we would ask for the users consent and we would also have a data protection policy which would describe how users data will be handled and stored to meet data protection standards and comply with the law (Data Protection Act 1998).
