For the purpose of this coursework, we have highlighted three websites with existing similar ideas as the one we are proposing. These three websites were located by using a keyword search on Google.com.
1. SwapRight – www.swapright.com
SwapRight is a free website for swapping and bartering services. You can find people offering the services you need and they can find you. It’s just like a trade and barter system. Once you find someone who wants to swap a service with you, then the two parties can now communicate outside of SwapRight to figure out the details.
You can also swap products on the website although it was created primarily to be for service swapping. At the moment SwapRight is an English-only website. It’s not exactly the same idea as the SkillTed app however it is a similar idea.
2. SkillSwap- www.skillswap.in
This is primarily a website for swapping skills. You have to be a Twitter user to be able to use this. On the website, the company claims the app is read—only and will therefore not tweet from your account or alter anything. Key points about this app is that all the help you want to render has to be web-based as there is nothing to indicate the location of who you want to swap services with. This makes it quite different form the proposed app we have in mind as Skillted would make use of location to connect the two parties physically.
3. Swapaskill- www.swapaskill.com
This is quite a popular website with over 60000 registered skills. According to the website, Swapaskill is an online community of giving, sharing, fun and friendship where people make friends and swap favours and items. Founded by Nicole Wehden who got the inspiration to start the website as a result of her growing in a close knit community and how local people in her community used their skills and hobbies to do favours for each other. The website has a rating system as well whereby you can rate people after you have swapped a skill.
The major advantages Skillted has over existing similar websites is the geolocation functionality and the freemium business model it will operate on. The existing websites have only free versions, with Skillted a user has the opportunity to upgrade to a premium account if they are looking to sell any of the services they provide.
