{"id":7006,"date":"2017-08-28T01:31:30","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T01:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/?p=7006"},"modified":"2018-07-04T00:41:17","modified_gmt":"2018-07-04T00:41:17","slug":"smart-meter-research-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/smart-meter-research-portal\/","title":{"rendered":"Project: Smart Meter Research Portal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SERG is part of a team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/bartlett\/energy\/\">UCL<\/a> to deliver the new GB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/bartlett\/energy\/smart-meter-research-portal-smrp\">Smart Meter Research Portal<\/a> (SMRP) with <a href=\"http:\/\/gow.epsrc.ac.uk\/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP\/P032761\/1\">funding<\/a> from the UK <a href=\"http:\/\/epsrc.ac.uk\/\">Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/bartlett\/energy\/smart-meter-research-portal-smrp\">SMRP<\/a> will provide a secure, consistent and trusted channel for researchers to access high-resolution smart meter energy consumption data, which will facilitate innovative energy research for years to come.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading\">Project Summary<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong>&nbsp;Smart Meter Research Portal (SMRP) will provide a secure, consistent and trusted channel for researchers to access high-resolution energy data<\/strong>, which will facilitate innovative energy research for years to come.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data will be collected via SMRP on a strictly voluntary basis.<\/strong>&nbsp;SMRP data will only be collected with the explicit consent of households who have agreed to provide their smart meter data to SMRP for research purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally,&nbsp;<strong>SMRP\u2019s strict governance framework<\/strong>&nbsp;will ensure that only accredited researchers will have access to anonymized data using established \u201c5 Safes\u201d protocols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"heading\">SMRP Vision<\/h2>\n<p>Our vision is to deliver a world leading multi-disciplinary research programme, facilitated by a smart meter data portal. The portal will transform UK energy research through the long-term provision of high quality, high-resolution energy data that will provide a reliable evidence base for intervention, observational and longitudinal studies across the socio-technical spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the portal are to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A consistent, trusted, and sustainable channel for researchers to access large-scale, high-resolution energy data, thereby providing a reliable empirical dataset for research;<\/li>\n<li>An effective mechanism for collecting energy data alongside other variables from national surveys (e.g. English Housing Survey) or individual research projects;<\/li>\n<li>A confidential, ongoing repository of smart meter data enhanced with contextual dwelling, household and neighbourhood attributes for use in secondary data analysis;<\/li>\n<li>An Energy Advice Service for consumers that request use of their smart meter data for this purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ambition of the research programme is to undertake research that will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support government policy;<\/li>\n<li>Kick-start the development of new products, services and energy markets;<\/li>\n<li>Help provide solutions to the energy trilemma (security, affordability and environmental sustainability);<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate better research by developing best practice guidelines and methods to improve data security and enable innovative uses of smart meter data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SMRP will also develop best practice for using smart meter data, combining expertise in innovative data science techniques with novel approaches to EUED research.<\/p>\n<h2>SERG Role<\/h2>\n<p>SERG&#8217;s role will be to develop options for the recruitment of participants based on our experience with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energy.soton.ac.uk\/tag\/save\/\">SAVE<\/a> and other large-scale energy montoring projects and to carry out research on habitual energy consumption to build on our work in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demand.ac.uk\/\">DEMAND<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SERG is part of a team led by UCL to deliver the new GB Smart Meter Research Portal (SMRP) with funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
