How do we engender and embed low carbon pathways and engineering solutions for demand reduction and power generation in cities?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"introduction\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_79\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/files\/2013\/04\/livCitDiag-web.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/files\/2013\/04\/livCitDiag-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"760\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-79\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liveable cities information flow chart highlighting the holistic approach addressed in the research programme.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Launched in 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/liveablecities.org.uk\/\">Liveable Cities<\/a>\u00a0is a five year\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gow.epsrc.ac.uk\/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP\/J017698\/1\">\u00a36.2m research programme<\/a>\u00a0jointly between the Universities of Southampton, Birmingham (lead), UCL and Lancaster. It has the ambitious aim of transforming \u201cthe engineering of cities to deliver global and societal wellbeing within the context of low carbon living and resource security through developing realistic and radical engineering that demonstrates the concept of an alternative future.\u201d In concrete terms, this means assessing where cities are today,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2008\/27\/contents\">where we need to get to by 2050<\/a>\u00a0in order to meet carbon reduction targets, how this might change under different scenarios and what might happen to people\u2019s wellbeing in the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Liveable Cities is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gow.epsrc.ac.uk\/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP\/J017698\/1\">programme grant<\/a>, which means that it is designed to support a range of research activities arranged around a central theme, in this case low carbon cities. Unlike smaller research grants which are focussed on specific objectives, a programme grant is more flexible and the individual research components will evolve over the five-year period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The figure on the right shows how the different components of the project\u00a0to be investigated by SERG in collaboration with the other partners fit into the project as a whole. A\u00a0baseline study\u00a0will characterize the energy performance of the target cities over a range of scales\u00a0(1), integrated within a GIS platform, looking holistically at building and transport emissions\u00a0(2 and 3).\u00a0\u00a0The baseline analysis will inform targeted\u00a0case studies\u00a0(4) engineers working in tandem with social scientists\u00a0will assess how people\u00a0behave\u00a0in response to technological solutions and whether it has a positive or negative impact on their\u00a0wellbeing (5)\u00a0the technological solutions will be tested for\u00a0acceptability\u00a0(6)\u00a0with interested parties, including, for example, \u00a0local government. This will lead to a body of evidence\u00a0(7)\u00a0which will,\u00a0in turn,\u00a0\u00a0inform revised\u00a0technological solutions\u00a0and finally\u00a0policy guidance\u00a0for transforming cities by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The research will be carried out by a team from Engineering and the Environment\u2019s\u00a0Sustainable Energy Research Group, working together with researchers from Social Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"updates\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Project updates<\/h2>\n<p><a name=\"Case_studies\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Liveable Cities &#8211; Proving trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>9 Case Studies showcase the breadth and applicability of the Liveable Cities research to practice and to everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>Read them online and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/liveable-cities-case-studies\/\">download a PDF copy<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><a name=\"little_books\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Liveable Cities &#8211; Little Book series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the roadshows and a successful closing event in the House of Lords, the Liveable Cities &#8211; Little Book series are now available online to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/serg\/liveable-cities-little-book-series\/\">download as PDF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Little Books aim to be easy to read and accessible in order to inform the public about some of the key research outputs and the main findings of the Liveable Cities research programme.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"rezoning_project\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Rezoning of Southampton Itchen Riverside<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the Liveable Cities meetings in Southampton and in Lancaster, the rezoning of the city theme is to initially focus on the area around the West bank of the River Itchen.
