



{"id":209,"date":"2014-03-25T10:24:59","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T10:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/?p=209"},"modified":"2015-12-16T11:50:14","modified_gmt":"2015-12-16T11:50:14","slug":"flourishing-in-the-21st-century-tedx-southamptonuniversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/2014\/03\/25\/flourishing-in-the-21st-century-tedx-southamptonuniversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Flourishing in the 21st Century &#8211; TEDx SouthamptonUniversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Guest blog by Amy Nicholass, Student Sustainability Champion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do atomic gardens, dancing, giant petri dishes, a \u2018Parliament of Clowns\u2019, pre-birth adaptation, theramins, the Queen\u2019s signature, GM trees, radio waves and Gorilla dung have in common?<\/p>\n<p>The answer?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedxsouthamptonuniversity2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-208 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedxsouthamptonuniversity2014.jpg\" alt=\"tedxsouthamptonuniversity2014\" width=\"670\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedxsouthamptonuniversity2014.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedxsouthamptonuniversity2014-300x110.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They were all part of TEDx at the University of Southampton this Sunday at the Nuffield\u00a0theatre. TED stands for Technology Entertainment and Design, and through <a title=\"TED.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TED.com<\/a> it promotes \u2018ideas worth spreading\u2019 via short talks. \u00a0TEDx Southampton University (in its second year) is organised mainly by students and was hosted by James Dyke, lecturer at the University, with the optimistic theme of \u2018Flourishing in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There were twelve performances which you\u2019d think would make for an intense Sunday afternoon, but being only around 15 minutes each and with an hour break for cake and inspiring chat, it made for a wonderful delve into the key issues we are facing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-213 alignright\" title=\"Spacedog\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_spacedog-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"tedx2014_spacedog\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_spacedog-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_spacedog.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The quirky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacedogmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spacedog<\/a> performances were a personal highlight. The eerie electronic sound of a theramin accompanied by hand bells and a talking Ventriloquist dummy head was captivating and hauntingly beautiful. It was fantastic to have such a mix of art and scientific discovery on the same bill. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ella_Hickson\" target=\"_blank\">Ella Hickson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theplace.org.uk\/ben-duke\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Duke<\/a>\u00a0took us on their journey of collaboration with doctors, researchers and patients to create a short theatre performance about the human experience of maintaining dignity in the face of cancer. After eliciting many laughs, the palpable stillness and silence as the audience was captivated by the power of dance to express what cannot be said with statistics or words was incredibly moving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/medicine\/about\/staff\/hcr.page\" target=\"_blank\">Dr Helen Roberts<\/a>\u00a0allayed some of my old age fears by saying it\u2019s never too late to live well now (and perhaps take up Ballroom dancing) so we can enjoy the extra decades we will have in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/demography\/about\/staff\/jcf1.page\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Falkingham<\/a> gave us some demography \u2018pub facts\u2019\u2013 did you know that 50% of those born in the UK in 2007 will live to be 103? That\u2019s why the Queen has stopped signing the telegrams!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahangliss.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Angliss<\/a>\u00a0shared\u00a0her passion for the national archives, warned of the short term nature of techno fixes, and advised that we should take a leaf out of the book of the Electrical Association of Women and get more scientists and engineers in parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_audience.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-212 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_audience-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"tedx2014_audience\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_audience-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/sa\/files\/2014\/03\/tedx2014_audience.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Eye openers for me were how the rules for open access radio wave frequencies led to so much innovation (nearly every mobile device we use), and \u00a0how global knowledge sharing itself can optimise our pre-adaptation to changing environmental conditions before we are even born.\u00a0Documentary film maker <a href=\"http:\/\/tedxsouthamptonuniversity.wordpress.com\/kate-maple\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Maple<\/a>\u2019s journey from feeling helpless about the world\u2019s problems to inspiring others to embrace the change, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cms.int\/about\/ambassadors\/portrait_ian_redmond.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Ian Redmond<\/a>\u2019s reminder of our interconnectedness with the Gorillas and Elephants who garden the rainforests were very humbling.
