Yesterday I met with Chris Speckman who is an ECS Alumni. I worked with him on a small outreach project that we are looking to expand. Here is a summary of what happened.<\/p>\n
Chris Speckman approached Joyce\u00a0Lewis in ECS to express his concern about the lack of opportunity to visit\u00a0Engineering Labs for rural schools and girls in those schools. Chris had\u00a0link\u00a0with schools he wanted to bring in to show off the department. I worked\u00a0with\u00a0him to co-ordinate these visits. This is how it worked:<\/p>\n
\u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0Chris had the link with the\u00a0school and introduced me to the contact from the school.\u00a0I then arranged for Chris and I\u00a0to go into the school to give a presentation to 40 sixth form students\u00a0about\u00a0computing careers and degrees. As well as University life in Southampton.<\/p>\n
\u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0We then invited a class of\u00a0pupils in to the university to see campus life 35 year 8 pupils.\u00a0This was successful. The school is now a\u00a0regular link. For instance \u2013 30 girls from the school attended our\u00a0international womens day event. We aim to keep these links going so we\u00a0invite students\u00a0in atleast once in the academic year so we have a consistent stream of\u00a0students\u00a0from these schools coming in.<\/p>\n
If this didn\u2019t happen then:<\/p>\n
I would not have pursued the \u00a0school.\u00a0This link would not exist.We have now opened the eyes of approx\u00a0120 students to university life.<\/p>\n
