format.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been trying to find out and have come up with three (plus one control case) potential improvements.\u00a0 These all utilise the ECS ePrints RSS feed which can be accessed here: <a title=\"http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2\" href=\"http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2\">http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Control Case<\/h2>\n<p>This is the base case consisting of the default ePrints RSS feed.\u00a0 Not much to say about this one: the body consists of just the authors and there are no embedded images.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_179\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Feedly1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-179\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Feedly1-300x277.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Feedly1-300x277.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Feedly1.png 977w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Control Case - Unedited RSS feed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2\" href=\"http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2\">http:\/\/eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/cgi\/latest_tool?output=RSS2<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Case 1: PDF Preview and Article Abstract<\/h2>\n<p>In Case 1, the ePrints generated PDF preview image is used and embedded in the RSS item.\u00a0 Also, I have replaced the default list of authors with the abstract of the paper which is much more useful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/preview.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/preview-300x277.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/preview-300x277.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/preview.png 976w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Case 1: PDF preview and article abstract.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>+ Easy to find and insert preview for items where one is present.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Preview not present for all items in feed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; In many cases is not much more interesting than the control case.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/ab-prv.rss\" href=\"http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/ab-prv.rss\">http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/ab-prv.rss<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Case 2: Article Abstract and Image Extracted from PDF Document<\/h2>\n<p>In this case I have again used the abstract as the body, but for the image I have used an image extraction tool to extract images from each PDF, and then hand-picked the most interesting one from each item, and embedded that.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/pdfimg.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-182\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/pdfimg-300x278.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/pdfimg-300x278.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/pdfimg.png 973w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Case 2: Article abstract and PDF extracted image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>+ Relevant to the item.<\/p>\n<p>+ Can sometimes give a more attractive image than case 1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Not all items have a PDF present, and not all PDFs present contain extractable images.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Many items do not contain attractive or interesting images.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Hard to select which image is the best automatically.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/Abstract-pdfimg.rss\" href=\"http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/Abstract-pdfimg.rss\">http:\/\/users.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/ad10g08\/Abstract-pdfimg.rss<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Case 3: Article Abstract and Keyword Image Searching<\/h2>\n<p>In this case I again used the abstract, and also added an image which was found using keyword search for creative commons images on Flickr.\u00a0 The images were sorted by &#8220;interesting&#8221;, and the top image selected.\u00a0 The keywords were selected by hand from primarily the keyword field if present, or if not by hand selecting an important word from the title.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Keyword.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Keyword-300x277.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Keyword-300x277.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/oneshare\/files\/2011\/06\/Keyword.png 981w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Case 3: Article abstract and keyword searched image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>+ Images can be found for every item.<\/p>\n<p>+ Images are more exciting and interesting in most cases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
