{"id":2267,"date":"2017-10-17T19:59:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T19:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/?p=2267"},"modified":"2017-10-17T20:11:26","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T20:11:26","slug":"portico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2017\/10\/17\/portico\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Wylie (Portico Quartet) &#8216;VIP Guest Talk&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span class=\"\">On Friday 13th October, Jack Wylie from the group\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/porticoquartet.com\/\">Portico Quartet<\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"\">visited the Southampton Music Department to deliver a\u00a0\u2018VIP Guest Talk&#8217; about his career and approach to making music. 3rd-Year Music student Archie Combes tells us more:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">After performing a short solo set of\u00a0soprano sax and\u00a0electronic loop pedals, Jack talked extensively\u00a0about how he forged a career in music whilst still being able to stay true to his own artist intentions. He spoke about: his early days of busking\u00a0on\u00a0the Southbank Centre in London with the Portico Quartet; the\u00a0\u2018cottage industry\u2019 the band set up in the homes to get their records out to the public; the band\u2019s nomination for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2008\/sep\/11\/johnfordham.jazz\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury Music Prize<\/a> and the impact it had; and the\u00a0experience of touring the world as a successful group. This was a fantastic opportunity for us as Music\u00a0students to\u00a0support an international band and it\u00a0also\u00a0gave us an opportunity to\u00a0perform to a new audience. We were pleased to see a really large audience turn up for our set and were very proud of the positive\u00a0responses we\u00a0received. We were then treated to\u00a0<\/span><i class=\"\">Portico Quartet\u2019s<\/i><span class=\"\">\u00a0fantastic set.
