Vicon are a world-leading developer\u00a0of motion-capture systems and they came to show us their face capture\u00a0technologies to explore their potential use in our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2016\/09\/14\/capturing-contemporary-conductor\/\">Capturing the Contemporary Conductor<\/a> research project \u00a0&#8211; Richard Polfreman (Music), Benjamin Oliver (Music), Cheryl Metcalf (Health Sciences), and research assistant Dan Halford. Vicon mo-cap systems are used in biomechanics research as well as the entertainment industry, where facial expression capture is used to drive\u00a0animated characters to\u00a0bring them more realistically to life.\u00a0Previous studies of conducting have highlighted\u00a0the importance of facial expressions in communicating to the ensemble, and so we are interested in capturing this information in addition to body motion and beyond simple video recording.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Oughton (EMEA Sales Manager), Dami Phillips (Technical Sales Engineer) and Katie Davies (Support Engineer) arrived at the motion capture lab with two boxes of kit which we were keen to unpack and try out as soon as possible. First was their brand new Cara Lite system, recently announced at <a href=\"http:\/\/s2017.siggraph.org\">SIGGRAPH\u00a02017<\/a>. This two-camera based system can be used markerless with analysis software to model the movement of\u00a0the wearer&#8217;s face once recorded. The system certainly felt lighter than the previous Cara system, and this version is designed to be customisable to different client needs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2215\" style=\"width: 344px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2017\/08\/18\/a-visit-from-vicon\/img_6447\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2215\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2215\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/08\/IMG_6447-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Ben Oliver wearing motion capture helmet\" width=\"344\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Research team member, composer and conductor Dr Benjamin Oliver wearing the Cara Lite motion capture system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next we tried the original Cara system, a complete 4-camera true 3D marker-based solution providing complete 3D motion data from\u00a0the markers on the subject&#8217;s face. Heavier than the Cara Lite, but the openness of the camera mounts facilitated a clear line of sight to the score for conducting.
