This touring exhibition provided a dynamic overview of the most exciting contemporary art produced in this country and I had the opportunity to activate artist Cally Spooner\u2019s piece <em>Damning Evidence Illicit Behaviour Seemingly Insurmountable Great Sadness Terminated in Any Manner<\/em> every weekend from October 2016 \u2013 January 2017 which was exhibited in Southampton City Art Gallery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2017\/02\/24\/british-art-show-8\/bashow2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2099\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2099\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/BAShow2.jpg\" alt=\"BAShow2\" width=\"791\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/BAShow2.jpg 791w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/BAShow2-300x259.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/BAShow2-768x662.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/BAShow2-700x604.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had the choice to sing one of two six minute librettos each week which explore moments when public heroes dishonoured themselves; reactions to Beyonc\u00e9 lip-syncing at the Whitehouse and to Lance Armstrong having taken performance-enhancing drugs. The librettos were made up of outraged fans&#8217; YouTube comments strung together to create a disjunctive narrative which explored the nature of speech online, which activated through operatic singing was a task in itself. I had to become a different person, opinion and righteous mind within every sentence. These librettos were programmed into a surtitle display (commonly used in opera) and were on a constant loop throughout the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2017\/02\/24\/british-art-show-8\/received_1245483808830588\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2100\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2100\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588-1024x520.jpeg\" alt=\"received_1245483808830588\" width=\"660\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588-1024x520.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588-300x152.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588-768x390.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588-700x356.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2017\/02\/received_1245483808830588.jpeg 1358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The open space of the gallery had beautiful acoustics and it was a fantastic\u00a0confidence boosting experience as every single week was different, with a varying number of people entering the gallery. I now often find myself eager to burst into song in open public spaces! Hopefully this doesn\u2019t become a habit of mine\u2026 The nature of <em>Damning Evidence<\/em> meant that the activation wasn\u2019t advertised, because of this, the highlight of this experience was the wide range of reactions from the public walking around the gallery. You wouldn\u2019t have known I was about to sing unless you looked it up in the artist booklet, so it came as a shock to many which was a great feeling \u2013 I often had to suppress the urge to laugh! Another rewarding experience I had was an artist approaching me with a drawing she\u2019d sketched of me during my performance!
