{"id":1896,"date":"2016-10-20T07:52:57","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T07:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/?p=1896"},"modified":"2016-10-20T08:17:23","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T08:17:23","slug":"superstar-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2016\/10\/20\/superstar-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Superstar Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Jon Gingell teaches guitar at Southampton University as well as working in theatre as performer, programmer and copyist. \u00a0He is a Southampton Music graduate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the summer break, I have been dividing my time between theatre work in Paris, Regent\u2019s Park Open Air Theatre and the National Theatre, and live gigs on the european blues festival circuit with American singer-songwriter Earl Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>In Paris I played guitar, ukulele and banjo for Damon Albarn\u2019s musical\u00a0<em>Wonder.land<\/em><i class=\"\">\u00a0<\/i>at the magnificent Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Ch\u00e2telet for a fortnight\u2019s run. The show did very well in front of a French audience, and the addition to the band of a very fine string quartet lifted the music no end.<\/p>\n<p>At Regent\u2019s Park, I worked as keyboard programmer and copyist on a critically-acclaimed new version of\u00a0<i class=\"\">Jesus Christ Superstar.\u00a0<\/i>The goal was to bring the musical back to its roots in early seventies rock music, necessitating Hammond organs, analogue synths, electric pianos and so on. The run was a great success and the band sounded in fine fettle!<\/p>\n<p>Back at the National Theatre I have been working with devised theatre company Complicite on their new musical,\u00a0<em>A Pacifist\u2019s Guide To The War On Cancer<\/em>, which toured to Manchester and Exeter before beginning its run in London. Again, I provided keyboard programming and copying, as well as being the guitarist on the show. It is a challenging piece about life with a cancer diagnosis and requires a lot of stylistic bases to be covered. (credit: Chris Cooper)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Live gigs over the summer with Earl Thomas included festivals in Focsani (Romania), Bliuzo Naktys (Lithuania), and UK festivals in Colne and Ealing.
