The Showcase intern role included a variety of activities which we split between the two of us. These included administrative task such as designing and running the website, answering email queries from prospective clients, gaining detailed information from the performers in order to efficiently plan concerts, produce programs and promote them on <a title=\"Southampton Showcase Facebook\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SouthamptonShowcase\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> and on the website.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1154\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1154\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Hatty.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1154 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Hatty-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Showcase artist Hatty Goody\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Hatty-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Hatty-700x478.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Hatty.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Showcase artist Hatty Goody<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Managing the Showcase concert series required liaising with our artists, the university, venues, ushers and stage managers, as well as piano tuners and sound engineers in order to\u00a0 plan the concert schedule and stage requirements.\u00a0 We also organised other events for our performers, such as talks by the Musician\u2019s Union and marketing professionals to help them prepare for their professional musical careers.<br \/>\nWe were surprised that the performers were not always 100% motivated to work with us, and some did not provide the necessary media to promote them effectively. The experience of learning important time management skill for our future careers was very valuable. We used regular meetings to keep on top of the tasks and to ensure that we all knew what we were doing.<br \/>\nOne particular challenge was to agree on the logo as a team \u2013 we had several meetings including marketing professionals to create different versions before settling on one that we were all happy with.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1157\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Showcaselogo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1157 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Showcaselogo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Our logo design\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Showcaselogo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Showcaselogo-432x432.jpg 432w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/files\/2015\/04\/Showcaselogo-268x268.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our logo design<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the skills that we learned throughout the year included using programs such as WordPress and Publisher, what works in social media marketing, and the different administrative and managerial skills involved in organising a concert.\u00a0 From this, we have gained a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of a concert, and what needs to be organised before performers step foot on the stage.<br \/>\nIt was a unique opportunity to be able to shape the Showcase Project by suggesting and implementing our own ideas and being able to draw from the experience of professionals in the industry. Being the inaugural team allowed us to help guide the project\u2019s direction and scope, which was an invaluable experience. Working with the internship team was also very enjoyable and the achievement of successfully managing a complete concert series was highly rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>For those interns following us: Keep calm and don\u2019t panic! There is a lot to do and it can seem a bit daunting when you first start.
