Its text is in Javanese, and consists of a ritual formula declaimed before the play begins. The leading contemporary group <a title=\"EXAUDI home\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exaudi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">EXAUDI<\/a> performed the work, described as a &#8216;tour de force&#8217; by the programme&#8217;s host.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve just been listening to this amazing piece, which combines intense lyricism with some brilliant vocal effects.\u00a0 It&#8217;s both beautiful and fiendishly difficult to sing, and I can&#8217;t think of many vocal ensembles other than EXAUDI who could do it.\u00a0 In his <a title=\"Guardian review\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2015\/feb\/04\/exaudi-review-wigmore-hall-london\" target=\"_blank\">review of Tuesday&#8217;s performance<\/a>, the <em>Guardian<\/em>&#8216;s George Hall commented, &#8220;The choir offered tremendous assurance combined with colouristic range in the work\u2019s dense writing, which demands absolute choral virtuosity and received it here.&#8221;\u00a0 Hilary Finch wrote in the <em>Times <\/em>that EXAUDI&#8217;s rendition of the piece was unforgettable, leaving her &#8220;stunned into silence.&#8221; You can still listen to the performance for another week on the <a title=\"BBC 3 Kelir\" href=\"\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b050xq2g\" target=\"_blank\">BBC website<\/a>, and I also noticed it&#8217;s up on <a title=\"YouTube Kelir\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cMQaIvYgq14\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a>.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t recommend it highly enough.<\/p>\n<p>Our department are big fans of EXAUDI, co-directed by soprano Juliet Fraser and composer-conductor James Weeks, who did his PhD at Southampton.\u00a0 The group has worked with Michael Finnissy for many years, and we were lucky enough to have them with us in November for our premiere of his <em><a title=\"Remembrance Day World Premiere\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/music\/2014\/11\/24\/remembrance-day-world-premiere\/\" target=\"_blank\">Remembrance Day.<\/a>\u00a0 <\/em> In 2016\u00a0 they plan to record <em>Kelir<\/em> and another of Michael&#8217;s compositions, <em>Gesualdo Libro Sesto<\/em> (2012-13), a work the ensemble commissioned.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a <a title=\"Kickstarter EXAUDI\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1433536966\/exaudi-finnissy-recording\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> underway to support the recording &#8211; donate now and you can get a free copy when it comes out!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeanice Brooks (Professor of Music) has been listening to a recent performance of work by Southampton colleagues and friends: Michael Finnissy&#8217;s extraordinary Kelir for unaccompanied vocal ensemble was the highlight of a Wigmore Hall concert last Tuesday, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
