The overall aims of our research are to enable active living and healthy ageing in the general population and to minimise limitations in those with musculoskeletal conditions.<\/p>\n

- Healthy ageing – maintenance of independence for as long as possible<\/li>\n
- Exercise and osteoarthritis \u2013 prevention of injury and progression to osteoarthritis in elite and recreational sports \/ activities<\/li>\n
- Hip pain<\/li>\n
- Hand conditions\u00a0 – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis<\/li>\n
- Shoulder pain<\/li>\n
- Foot conditions\u2013 rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis<\/li>\n
- Knee conditions \u2013 osteoarthritis, joint replacement, patellofemoral pain<\/li>\n
- Back pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
Research Approaches<\/strong><\/p>\n
A key feature of our research is its sound multidisciplinary base, primarily involving health and engineering disciplines, and patient and public involvement at all stages of projects (see below). Research approaches include:<\/p>\n

- basic science laboratory-based studies of biomechanical and physiological mechanisms of normal function, dysfunction and recovery<\/li>\n
- applied developmental studies of technologies for assessment and treatment<\/li>\n
- development of clinical and home-based exercise programmes<\/li>\n
- exploring communication and interaction between clinicians and patients<\/li>\n
- clinical reasoning<\/li>\n
- clinical trials of treatment effectiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Both quantitative and qualitative techniques are employed, with mixed methods being an essential ingredient in clinical trials.<\/p>\n
