In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_eruption_of_La_Soufri%C3%A8re\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the La Soufri\u00e8re volcano in St Vincent erupted<\/a> the first time since 1979, causing 16,000 residents to evacuate. We discussed what such disruptions teach us about the nature of science and the role of scientists and engineers in society.
