{"id":1551,"date":"2021-12-06T15:56:10","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T15:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mshe\/?p=1551"},"modified":"2021-12-06T15:58:54","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T15:58:54","slug":"new-public-engagement-project-funded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mshe\/new-public-engagement-project-funded\/","title":{"rendered":"New public engagement project funded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members from our research centre have been succesful securing funding by the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/per\/support\/funding.page\">Public &amp; Community Engagement (PCE) Development Fund<\/a> through the Public Engagement with Research Unit in order to develop a new approach for engaging young children with nature and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The project, <strong><em>Wild Citizens!<\/em> &#8211; enabling children to become active environmental citizens<\/strong>, encourages and supports primary school children to become active citizen scientists and environmental citizens by focusing on wildlife in their school grounds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-442 alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 16px\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mshe\/files\/2014\/05\/science-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mshe\/files\/2014\/05\/science-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mshe\/files\/2014\/05\/science.jpg 519w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>As future stewards of the planet, it is vital that today\u2019s children understand about climate change and sustainable development, and know how to engage in activities which help protect the environment. The pupils are participating in designing and constructing an outdoor \u2018Wild Science Lab\u2019 to attract, protect and record wildlife as part of an afterschool club.
