Exploring and presenting our research data in a readily understandable visual form is an important aspect of communicating our work. Last week at our inaugural MOOC Data Visualisation Hackthon, members of the Web Observatory<\/a> team and the Web and Internet Science<\/a> research group at the University of Southampton get together\u00a0to share and develop d3<\/a>\u00a0skills, explore new datasets, and make meaningful visualisations.<\/p>\n

Datasets containing comment data from the University of Southampton’s\u00a0Archaeology of Portus<\/a>\u00a0FutureLearn MOOC were made available on the day. Highlights of the event included Max Van Kleek<\/a>‘s\u00a0interactive Dendro visualisations, Paul Booth<\/a>‘s Tableaux<\/a> timeline, and Chris Gutteridge – Wikipedia<\/a>‘s visualisation<\/a> of domain-specific word occurrence. Many of the participants were new to d3 and\u00a0spent much of the afternoon following\u00a0Max’s useful guidelines and exploring the resulting\u00a0visualisations.<\/p>\n
