The meeting was well attended by a number of FutureLearn partners, coming from the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Groningen, Keio, Lancaster, Leicester, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton, Warwick; and the British Council, the British Library, and the Open University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The presentations covered a range of themes around SMART tools and approaches to researching MOOCs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0* \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mobs\/phd-students\/ayse-saliha-sunar\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Ayse Saliha Sunar<\/span><\/a> presented Visualisation of Social Networks by using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gnuplot.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gnuplot<\/a> in the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PechaKucha\" target=\"_blank\">PechaKucha<\/a>&#8216; session. She shared her experience the tool to visualise learners\u2019 interactions and the strength of their interactions in a 3D scatter-plot graph. She particularly focused on limitations of scatter-plots in identifying learners\u2019 interactions in massive scale. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0* \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/people\/agw106\"><span class=\"s2\">Adriana Wilde<\/span><\/a> talked about \u201cWhat is success anyway? : defining success in the context of FutureLearn MOOCs\u201d. In her PechaKucha, she showed the tensions between satisfaction and completion in terms of MOOCs course design. \u00a0The measures of success as currently understood by the community are challenged. \u00a0Completion in MOOCs (in contrast to face-to-face instruction), is no longer a reliable measure in this context as much of it depends on the goals the learner had when joining. \u00a0An alternative measure is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0* \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/people\/ml4c08\"><span class=\"s2\">Manuel Le\u00f3n-Urrutia<\/span><\/a> presented a Learning Analytics project called The UoS MOOC Dashboard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/ManuelLenUrrutia\/observing-moocs-in-real-time\"><span class=\"s2\">(see slides here)<\/span><\/a>. The project consists of a MOOC data visualisation tool for institutional stakeholders such as learning designers, educators, and it is expected to be implemented within the framework of the Southampton University Web Observatory, as the project has received funding from the Web Science Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0* \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ww.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/people\/tor1w07\"><span class=\"s2\">Tim O\u2019Riordan<\/span><\/a> outlined his use of digital tools to reveal and analyse patterns in MOOC discussion forum comments(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/studywbv\/future-learn-academic-networks-021215\" target=\"_blank\">slides<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.soton.ac.uk\/376609\/\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a>). These included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsoft_Excel\" target=\"_blank\">MS Excel<\/a>\u00a0(spreadsheet and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Visual_Basic_for_Applications\" target=\"_blank\">VBA<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qsrinternational.com\/product\" target=\"_blank\">NVivo<\/a> (qualitative data analysis), <a href=\"https:\/\/liwc.wpengine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LIWC<\/a> (text analysis), <a href=\"http:\/\/socrative.com\" target=\"_blank\">Socrative<\/a> (audience response), <a href=\"http:\/\/www-01.ibm.com\/software\/uk\/analytics\/spss\/\" target=\"_blank\">SPSS<\/a> (predictive analysis), <a href=\"http:\/\/get.tableau.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tableau<\/a> (data visualisation) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.waikato.ac.nz\/~ml\/weka\/\" target=\"_blank\">Weka<\/a> (machine learning).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0* \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/people\/stw1g13\"><span class=\"s2\">Steve White<\/span><\/a> discussed the use of Socio-Technical Interaction Networks to understand the socio-technical construction of MOOCs in HE. This approach seeks to balance concerns with social and technical factors in understanding the use of information systems in organisations, and avoid simplistic assumptions about the impact or effects of technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* In addition to the above speakers from the MOOC Observatory, Leah Marks, from the University of Glasgow presented on \u201cPlagiarism detection in MOOC peer review\u201d, where she shared experiences on the FutureLearn MOOC \u201cCancer in the 21st Century: The Genomic Revolution\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We also enjoyed discussions of ethics in MOOC research from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ms8679\"><span class=\"s2\">Professor Mike Sharples<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/rf2656\"><span class=\"s2\">Dr Rebecca Ferguson<\/span><\/a> from the O.U. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/R3beccaF\/the-ethicof-mooc-research-why-we-should-involve-learners\" target=\"_blank\">slides<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/education\/people\/jocelyn-m-wishart\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Dr Jocelyn Wisehart<\/span><\/a> from the University of Bristol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The day was rounded off with a panel discussion on the difference between practice and research in MOOCs with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/people\/saw\"><span class=\"s2\">Dr Su White<\/span><\/a> of Southampton\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wais.ecs.soton.ac.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Web and Internet Science Group<\/span><\/a> (Director of the MOOC Observatory) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/education\/about\/staff\/cb1y11.page\"><span class=\"s2\">Dr Christian Bokhove<\/span><\/a> of the University of Southampton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/education\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\">Education School<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The livestream recording of the event can be watched <a href=\"http:\/\/livestream.com\/universityofsouthampton\/FLAN\"><span class=\"s2\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the MOOC observatory recently presented at the FutureLearn Academic Network (FLAN) meeting at the University of Southampton.
