Both changes will significantly increase your ability to get your content securely to the right people and decrease the amount of time spent moving sessions between courses.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cGive me a one line summary\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>We will be creating some new folders based on your Blackboard course that will allow you to share sessions with more than a single year\u2019s course. We\u2019ll also make you a secure practice area that students and other staff cannot see.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cThat first bit sounds complicated\u201d<i> <\/i><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s easier to explain in pictures\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You currently have a folder linked to each of your Blackboard courses. It appears in \u201cRecorded Lectures\u201d in Blackboard and on the Panopto website at <a href=\"http:\/\/coursecast.soton.ac.uk\">http:\/\/coursecast.soton.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> These screenshots show an Example course. It\u2019s subject is \u201cExample\u201d, shown as \u201cEXAM\u201d and there are two modules EXAM1001 and EXAM1002. The courses have been Panopto enabled for two years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_780\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/07\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-780\" class=\"size-full wp-image-780\" alt=\"The existing Panopto folder structure\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/07\/1.jpg\" width=\"278\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The existing Panopto folder structure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you had a video that was useful to all your EXAM students (and re-used each year) you would need to either a) copy the video into each folder or b) place the video into one folder and make it public (or the new \u201cinternal\u201d setting).<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll change the folder structure to look like this<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_781\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/07\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-781\" class=\"size-full wp-image-781\" alt=\"Each folder is now a subfolder of the 4 character subject code and 8 character course code\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/07\/2.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new Panopto folder structure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You\u2019ll still have your <i>EXAM1001-12345-13-14<\/i> folder (<b>so you can continue to work as normal and ignore these changes if you wish<\/b>), but you\u2019ll also now have an <i>EXAM1001, EXAM1002<\/i> and <i>EXAM<\/i> folder.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you wanted a video to be secured to a course on a particular year (for example a lecture capture) put it in the <i>EXAM1001-12345-13-14<\/i><i> <\/i>folder where only students on that specific course + year will see it<\/li>\n<li>If you wanted a video to be available to this years, previous years and subsequent years folders (i.e. where you might have previously asked us to \u201croll over\u201d video) put it in the <i>EXAM1001<\/i> folder. Students enrolled on the 12-13 or 13-14 (in this example) and subsequent years\u2019 courses will see it<\/li>\n<li>If you wanted a video to be available to all students, over all years in a subject (for example a chemistry health and safety video) put it in the top level <i>EXAM<\/i> folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u201cWhat does this fix?\u201d<i> <\/i><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have two similar courses <i>EXAM2004-12345-13-14: Engineering and the Environment<\/i> and <i>EXAM2004-23456-13-14: Engineering and the Environment (USMC)<\/i> you are now able to put the video into <i>EXAM2004<\/i> and both courses will see the video<\/li>\n<li>You should never have to move re-usable video into a different year\u2019s folder (which removes the previous year\u2019s students from seeing it)<\/li>\n<li>Our retention policy states that videos are deleted a full academic year after they are created (videos recorded in October 2014 would be deleted September 2016, videos recorded in July 2015 would be deleted September 2016). You now have a place to move videos you wish to keep<\/li>\n<li>The Panopto admin interface will be neatly organised by subject and course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u201cYou mentioned a secure folder?\u201d<i> <\/i><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re making everyone a folder that they can practice in. All staff will have access to their own practice folder and no-one else will be able to view content placed into the folder. <b>We will automatically delete content in the practice folder after two weeks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i><i>What benefit does that give me?<\/i><i>\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will no longer have to record practice sessions into your course, where students could see your mistakes<\/li>\n<li>You will no longer have to request a practice folder (and corresponding Blackboard course)<\/li>\n<li>No staff member should ever get to a lecture theatre and find that they cannot use the Panopto Recorder (remember to move the session to a real course folder within 14 days)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are making two changes to the Panopto service in one week\u2019s time.
