{"id":726,"date":"2014-06-09T10:25:07","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T10:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/?p=726"},"modified":"2014-06-13T07:43:06","modified_gmt":"2014-06-13T07:43:06","slug":"blackboard-2014-upgrade-what-do-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/2014\/06\/09\/blackboard-2014-upgrade-what-do-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackboard 2014 Upgrade &#8211; What do you need to know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend Blackboard will be upgraded to the latest version. \u00a0A number of exciting new features will be available along with an updated interface. \u00a0Initial load testing suggests our new Blackboard installation will be the fastest yet. \u00a0This page summarises what staff and students at the University of Southampton need to know.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blackboard 2014 Overview\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GprGaPHDU6E?wmode=transparent&#038;fs=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2><!--more-->Do you have the right web browser?<\/h2>\n<p>The biggest change to Blackboard will be that Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported.<\/p>\n<p>As previously notified, Staff who use University Desktop Environment (UDE) Windows computers will need to <a title=\"Instructions on how to install Firefox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/isolutions\/computing\/elearn\/blackboard\/installfirefox.html\" target=\"_blank\">install Firefox<\/a> or <a title=\"Instructions on how to install Chrome\" href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/isolutions\/computing\/elearn\/blackboard\/installchrome.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chrome<\/a> if they have not done so already whilst they await iSolutions rolling out a newer version of Internet Explorer this summer. \u00a0IE11 has already been rolled out to iSolutions staff machines for testing prior to rolling out to the wider University community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#browsers\">A full list of compatible web browsers is at the bottom of this page.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>When you first login after the upgrade<\/h2>\n<p>Following the successful upgrade Blackboard will tell you about the most important new feature to get to know. \u00a0This is called the Global Navigation menu. \u00a0Blackboard will point out where this can be found.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_731\" style=\"width: 971px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/06\/hello_charlie.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-731\" class=\"size-full wp-image-731\" alt=\"Blackboard welcomes you when you first login and shows you how to find the Global Navigation menu.\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/06\/hello_charlie.png\" width=\"961\" height=\"669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/06\/hello_charlie.png 961w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/files\/2014\/06\/hello_charlie-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 961px) 100vw, 961px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blackboard welcomes you when you first login and shows you how to find the Global Navigation menu.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Blackboard\u2019s \u201cGlobal Navigation\u201d is an area that is always shown at the top right corner wherever you are in Blackboard. The Drag and Drop &#8220;Handles&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h2>New Text Editor<\/h2>\n<p>The text editor has been updated to use &#8220;true HTML&#8221; and have much better handling of tables and other elements. \u00a0A &#8220;full screen&#8221; User avatars are shown beside discussion board posts.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"First Look: Student Preview\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/2014\/05\/20\/first-look-student-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\">Student Preview<\/a> Student preview is a feature that allows Blackboard course instructors to review their course in the exact same way as a student.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"First look: target=\"_blank\">Instantly change the colour scheme of your Blackboard course<\/a> With the new version of Blackboard, instructors will have the opportunity to change the colour scheme of their course from a preset selection<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"First look: Improvements to Blackboard quiz features\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/2014\/05\/08\/first-look-improvements-to-blackboard-quiz-features\/\" target=\"_blank\">Improvements to Blackboard quiz features<\/a> A number of improvements to the quiz engine, including staggered feedback.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"First look: Improved Blackboard Group Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/mle\/2014\/03\/28\/first-look-improved-blackboard-group-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\">Improved Group Administration<\/a> create Grade Centre smart views based on group membership, and upload group members via a CSV file.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s this weekend!<\/h2>\n<p>Remember that the upgrade is taking place from midnight on 14 June and should be finished by
